After deciding against his own U.S. Senate bid, Bob Kerrey is helping fellow Democrat Scott Kleeb raise money for his race.

An e-mail from Kerrey, circulated by the Kleeb campaign, asks for donations. Kerrey says the pundits say Kleeb can't win against Republican opponent Mike Johanns.

But Kerrey said he's living proof anything can happen in Nebraska politics.

Kerrey, president of The New School university in New York, considered running for the Senate seat that is open because Republican Chuck Hagel isn't seeking re-election.

But Kerrey decided against running, citing family and unfinished plans at The New School.

Kerrey served as Nebraska governor from 1983-1987, then as a U.S. Senator from Nebraska from 1989-2001.

does anyone have any idea whether Bob Kerrey has an interest in being the VP nominee, or serving in the Cabinet or some other position? I would be happy to see him as one of several policy advisers. I don't know how he's done as an Administrator, I suppose the University where he is now would know best. As a Democrat, I like him well enough. I didn't support him when he ran for President, but I wasn't againt him either. I still say it takes more courage for a Republican to oppose the Iraq war (I count around l0 of them in Congress who have dared oppose it, with Hagel one of the most thoughtful and consistent, and helpful in his suggestions for alternatives). It would be great to have both Kerrey and Hagel, and maybe the loser of the Nebraska Senate race, in various positions in the new Administration. I hope Nebraska Democrats will support Obama, especially in the Omaha district, where he might have a realistic chance of winning an electoral vote. I like "purple" states!

I just commented on the poll story, but I'd rather praise Democrats, Hagel supporters, and progressives! When I say that MCain is meaner now, I can quote him and show recent changes in his positions: less independent, more pro-Bush and neo-con. He was better in 2000. When I say Bush-Cheney have ruled and ruined, that is being documented all the time. But I truly want the National GOP to be saved from the evil coalition that has taken control of it. I want to see the decent ones again, like Bob Ray of Iowa, and even the personally-decent, quite conservative Terry Branstad, Iowa's two long-time Governors. Hagel and Jim Leach are superior to many Democrats, and are in a class by themselves. In a National GOP infested with neo-cons, dirty-tricksters, and those who want to start multiple wars (all documented), an old-style conservative is the best the GOP can do. Johanns wasn't going to run against Hagel, was he? Others were. Even Kleeb? This is not a now-or-never chance for Kleeb!

Johanns is clearly a nice-ehough guy in his personal style. Notice how these neo-cons don't say many nice things about him, but only say mean things about Obama and Democrats. That tells us that the GOP is divided in Nebraska, probably three ways. The very good ones who are for Hagel. The very bad ones -- neo-cons, war-mongers, name-callers, the dirty-tricks-types who lie and slander, the narrow-minded ones, the racists, the totally uninformed or misinformed who watch Fox news and believe it. Then the center, probably nice, hard-working, well-meaning, traditionally conservative (not-neo-con), traditionally Republican, unquestioning about what is really going on in the world, trusting of Republican authority figures -- and not bad human beings. Probably very typical Johanns supporters. They are comfortable with the familiar, centrist-seeming, calm, do-not-inquire-too-deeply type person. But the times now call for deeper inquiry into how Bush and Cheney have ruled and ruined.

Let the Neo-cons be heard!!!

Go Donald! I think we should elect Sean Hannity for President though. Proud to be a neo-con Lynnette! We need a Reagan Conservative in the White House, Senate, Congress, etc... God help us if Osama Obama gets elected.

Excuse me for not being polite Lynnette but these are REAL issues and the democratic party wants to take rights away from me. Of course I am fired up!

I agree that Bush and Cheney, along with the neocons and the karlRove types, are the ones causing the problems. I think that the Big Oil people are behind many of our problems, including the war and high prices. But also there needs to be a law to get the speculators out of the crude oil market -- there were excellent hearings on that recently. Kleeb seems like a good guy -- farm life and history degrees are a good combination. I suspect Johanns would follow the GOP party line -- helping the rich and powerful, even if he is a more polite person that many Republicans are! And he may be too set in his ways to change very much. I think it is better to point out how much better Kleeb is, rather than being hostile to Johanns personally. It is even risky to be hostile to MCain (although it is totally unfair, since he and his supporters are allowed to be as vicious as they wish to be against Obama, and the press doesn't criticize McCain very much). OK to criticize Bush and Cheney, however!

If Obama is elected gas prices won't matter any way, we will all be giving 60% of our paychecks to the communist healthcare system so we will all be broke then too.

Hey Donald were talking about Kerry and Kleeb, not the REAL CROOKS Bush and Cheney. It's time for a change, but your people like the high gas prices, bad economy,it would be the same with John McCain. We need a change.

2 crooked politicians are better than 1.

Good Job, Bob Kerry!! Bob Kerry is one of the "good guys!" I am so glad that you have not forgotten us! I agree, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to send a real leader to Washington. Let's give Scott the chance to do good not only for Nebraska but also for the nation.

If Democrats go over to the Hagel VP Obama site, you will see how nasty some Republicans are. Separate them from the nice ones who support Hagel and Ron Paul. Also check out the initiative (with the phoney "civil rights" name) that is being sponsored by the nasty people who "swift-boated" John Kerry. You will find some decent Republicans who oppose that also. Beware - it is a trick to bring out the right-wing GOP vote. You Democrats need to be willing to join a larger coalition -- with Republicans and Independents who oppose that phoney proposal. And make sure Democratic voters don't fall for it. It will look good to uninformed people! Check out all the folks who are behind it -- nationally -- the worst types of slanderers and political operators. It is a race-baiting trick being used as part of the slanders against Obama. If you can get Hagel and Johanns to come out against it, and say "we don't want those tactics in Nebraska" then work with them. Be bi-partisan when you can!

bravo for Kerrey! I think Kleeb can win and should win, and will win if Democrats don't believe all the nonsense about Johanns having it all wrapped up because of his past experience. It will take a lot of research to get specific about things that he did that you think were mistakes -- can't get by with just saying he's for the rich (GOP mostly are, but I think he plays the role of down-home nice-guy plus boy-who-made-good with enough skill to be nearly convincing -- as an observer I certainly find him more personally likeable than most Republicans I disagree with, and not as corny as "awshucks" Huckabee- who won the Iowa GOP caucuses). So I wish you well, Nebraska Democrats, and especially Kleeb. Be nice to Chuck Hagel and the Republicans who like him -- and to Ron Paul and the folks who like him -- so if they get disgusted enough with the Bush-Cheney-Rove element of the GOP, they'll feel welcome among Democrats. Read my Hagel VP comments, please. Be polite! Win!
