Cool, wet weather has delayed wheat harvest in the state, but it could be worth the wait for farmers in western Nebraska.
Normally about halfway done by July 4, the wheat harvest hasn't even started or is just beginning across most of the state. Barring big rains, the harvest is expected to be in full swing this week.
Royce Schaneman of the Nebraska Wheat Board predicts that the statewide yield this year will be above average.
The big gainers will be western Nebraska farmers.
Many eastern Nebraska wheat farmers got too much of a good thing this spring when heavy rains brought above-normal precipitation and flooding in some areas.
