Merrick County authorities are looking into a possible animal cruelty case.

Sheriff Tony McPhillips said he found about 20 dead cattle this week on land owned by a Grand Island man.

The man who owns the land also owned the cattle. He told McPhillips that he arranged for someone to feed and water the cattle while he was out of town, but apparently no one tended to the animals.

McPhillips said he's preparing a report for the county attorney on whether the owner committed animal cruelty and broke a law that requires animal carcasses to be properly removed and disposed of within 72 hours of death.

Both violations are misdemeanors.

Another cow-neglect in this county? Yes, its easy to blame someone else. Ultimately, the cows are the owners' responsibility. All it took was a phone call to the person to be taking care of the cows....and a trusted neighbor or someone else to double check. Cows don't just generally die overnight. Hope this guy isn't claiming 20 dead cows on his insurance....because that's alot of money he just lost!

If the farmer had it arranged to have someone take care of the cattle, the crime should fall on the person that had promised to take care of the animals. Its not the farmers fault that the other person didn't do as they had said that they would.
