A new, nationwide report said Nebraska could save more than $102 million a year on health care if more money were invested in disease prevention programs.
The report from nonprofit Trust for America's Health said by investing $10 per resident each year on top of what it already spends, the state would see the net savings within five years.
The reports said the investment of about $17.5 million investment should go to community-based programs to prevent smoking and increase physical activity and nutrition.
That's estimated to reduce the rates of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.
Trust for America's Health director Jeff Levi said keeping American's healthy is one way to reduce the health care costs that are crippling the U.S. economy.
