A Nebraska hero was laid to rest today.

21-year-old Pfc. Christopher Pfeifer was injured in Afghanistan by a sniper bullet in August.

Pfeifer fought for his life for more than a month, before dying September 25th at a military hospital in San Antonio.

Funeral services for Pfeifer were held today in his home town of Spalding.

Hundreds turned out in the small town to say goodbye.

Friends who served with Pfeifer called him a hero.

Ryan Jones said, "It's always hard to bury one of your brothers, but it's also great to be here to celebrate the part of Chris that I didn't see and that I didn't know."

Family friends say Pfeifer was shot as he tried to pull fellow soldiers out of harms way.

Jones didn't see that when they served together in Germany, but he said Pfeifer was capable of anything.

Jones said, "He was an excellent young man, young soldier. I knew him more professsionally than personally, but he was an excellent soldier."

Several members of the Patriot Guard were there, including some who served in Pfeifer's unit a generation ago in Vietnam.

Allen Thomsen said, "The important thing to us is that he was an American soldier and he's going to be missed by family and friends. And he was a paratrooper, and so for anyone who's been a paratrooper, that's a special loss."

Jones said, "He loved his family, loved his native Nebraska, he was an awesome father to be. He was proud."

Pfc. Chris Pfeifer is survived by his parents, Mike and Dar, and his wife Karen who just recently gave birth to their daughter, Peyton.

It was a very strong and prideful showing of community support. Hundreds of American flags were tended along the procession. Also present were many area American Legion Honor Guard along with military Honor Guards. A very emotional yet uplifting day! Thanks to all!
