University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman today announced he has asked UNL Athletic Director Steve Pederson to step down from the post he has held since January 2003. Perlman said he believes Pederson is no longer positioned to move the Athletic Department forward.

"We are of course disappointed about the progress in our football program. Steve has done many positive things for Husker athletics during his tenure but I think only new leadership can objectively assess the state of our program and make the decisions necessary to move us forward," Perlman said.

Pederson's contract was renewed for five years at the end of July.

"You make the best decision you can with the information you have," Perlman said.

Since then, Perlman says he has noted a decline in morale in the Athletic Department, and growing concern about retention of key personnel.

Perlman said he will immediately initiate conversations to identify an interim athletic director with full authority to assess the state of the Athletic Department and its athletic programs and to make any decision necessary to advance those programs. He also indicated his intention to consult with a national search consultant to begin the process for selection of a new permanent athletic director.

"It is not clear how long such a process will take or its precise form. It is important it be done expeditiously but thoughtfully," Perlman said.

"The selection of Steve Pederson in 2003 as athletic director was widely thought to be the only clear choice because of his experience, his roots and his knowledge of our traditions. I know Steve made the decisions he thought best for the interests of the program and the university. I am disappointed that I had to come to this decision."

Every time they fire someone their performance becomes worse, would the same hold true for academics if they replaced some of their faculty recruited from the third world? Where does prevalence really count?

Posted by: lily on Oct 16, 2007 at 02:58 PM
I think we need Tom as A.D, Bo as defensive coach and Turner Gill as head coach then we would have our DREAM team. Yesterday was a good day for the n.u football program. Harvey way to go and finally stand on your own two feet.

Its finally nice to see someone got rid of the fox in the hen house!! Now we just need to do something with the snakes!! Maybe we could call Dr. Osborne in?

Posted by: Big Husker Fan Location: Grand Island on Oct 15, 2007 at 09:49 PM
This is a GREAT start!! About time! I never believed his cheesy smile and always telling you that everything was going great! Peterson made changes to almost everything of the old traditions: the old tunnel walk, recruiting Nebraska kids, walk-on program etc. (We got many Nebraska kids playing football at other Big 12 schools). It hasn't felt like this was "OUR" team ever since Peterson was hired. NOW IT IS A CHANCE TO BE OUR TEAM AGAIN. Next should be Callahan. Callahan is a nice guy, but is NOT getting the job done. Bring Tom Osborne in as AD, bring Turner Gill, Bo Pelini, and others back. We need a fresh start after this horrible experiment!

Perlman started this mess. He needs to go too. He seems to be cut from the same mold as Pederson.

Posted by: Bob Location: Norfolk on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:45 PM
Between Steve and Bill, they have collected several million dollars from UNL. (And probably much more by the time we buy out a 5 yr. contract "given" to an idiot by a friend.) What a cost to prevent "gravitating to mediocrity". Many red fans would probably love to have a 9-3 season now!!!

Posted by: ash Location: lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:45 PM
HEY BRIAN, Don't you think your GOD has better thing's to do then worry about little thing like this, I hope it's just a figure of speach, cause you can go to the Looney farm for that comment.

Posted by: Randy Location: Pensacola on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:39 PM
As a qualification for Pederson getting his undeserved and final pay check make him call Coach Solich and apologize for his stupidity in firing him. A 10-2 record looks pretty good right now.

Posted by: Tommy Location: Aurora on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:09 PM
I can't believe it. Someone finally woke up and smell the roses. It took long enough time to get rid of Steve Pederson. Now we need to get rid of Callahan and Cosgrove. This made my day!!!! What is Callahan is going to do without his right hand man?

Posted by: Mary Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 07:05 PM
Osborne if you are asked to be AD, PLEASE accept. We need someone who knows Nebraska and someone who knows what type of coaches to hire to bring back true Husker football. You are the only solution to this problem.

Posted by: Joe Location: McCool Junction on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:37 PM
Husker fans rejoice!! It's about time!! Firing Frank and gutting a program with a tradition of excellence was just plain wrong! Now drop the other shoe and fire Callihan & Co.!!!

Posted by: lisa Location: colorado on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:37 PM
Anyone that shows up at Husker Nation on game day in a baby blue sports coat instead of a red sports coat is an idiot especially if they are the AD of the school. Pederson was totally self absorbed. Bring back the integrity! GO BIG RED!!

Posted by: Rick Location: Kansas on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:37 PM
Go Big Red.....Bye Bye Pederson....Please go Callahan!!!

Posted by: Steve Location: LINCOLN on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:36 PM
It would be worth $5 MILLION to get rid of Pederson, he's cost UNL and us football fans more than money can cure. Steve's performance surpassed mediocrity!!

Best news I heard all day!!

Posted by: ron Location: pittsburgh, pa on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:16 PM
there is alot of thoughts going through my mind right now, but all i will say thank god. its about time. now everyone needs to get behind the players and show our support for them. (btw bill, i hope your next)

Posted by: Julia Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:09 PM
Too much money, too much power, too much ego. And no real coaching abilities for a winning team...While the players enjoy, yet, another day off from practice.

Posted by: AE Location: lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:06 PM
Even though his is gone now, it still doesnt matter, because he fired solich after a 10 and 3 season. if he didnt fire solich who knows, we could have actually been a bcs contenders. But now with him gone maybe we can start over new and get a bcs win.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Columbus on Oct 15, 2007 at 06:04 PM
It's a great day in Nebraska!!!! I never did like Pederson when he first came here. He never cared about anything more than money, money, money. Now let's get down to business............Go Huskers!!!

Posted by: Mike Location: Columbus on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:39 PM
Frank Solich is probably on the ground laughing today. Thanks Steve.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:35 PM
AMEN!!!!!!!

Posted by: Jeff Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:32 PM
What a great day for Nebraska Football. The firing of Steve Pedersen. Now the new AD can finish the job by getting rid of Bill and Kevin. Good bye guys.

Posted by: KT Location: LA CA on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:31 PM
Yipee!!!!! Watch out Callahan, you could be next!

Posted by: Al Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:19 PM
Its the right time to bring back old traditions, what would Bob Devaney think of this rediculous program, now start with a new coaching staff that knows the our old traditions, like the running option, etc. Bill and his staff need to go.

Posted by: Dave Location: Kearney on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:15 PM
Callahan should have been fired along with Pederson. The football program needs new direction now!!!

Posted by: John and Linda Marshall Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:14 PM
Good riddance. Anyone who shuns former Nebraska football players, doesn't talk to them about donations, or refuses to talk to them, has no loyalty. Pederson is an egomaniac, and $2 million richer. He wanted Camelot his way, and forget 45 years of tradition. And, Osborne would make a tremendous interim AD. He knows whats going on, and can find a permanent replacement.

Posted by: doug Location: beatrice on Oct 15, 2007 at 05:01 PM
I think this (Pederson's release) lays the groundwork for "Coach" Osborne to resurrect a program that has suffered since he left. I grew up just out of diapers when Dr O took over the program and he is the only coach I know (and feel) that can bring Husker football back to it's national domination. Some may not agree with this but....Go Dr O!

Posted by: Adam Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:53 PM
I knew Steve Pederson was an idiot, since the day he fired Solich, and today was a day of celebration for myself and many co-workers.

Posted by: GAYLE Location: LINCOLN on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:51 PM
I AM TOTAALY HAPPY TO SEE PEDERSON GONE!!!!!!!!! HE HAD NO RESPECT FOR COACH SOLICH,WHEN WE BEAT COLO. HE DIDN,T EVEN GO DOWN AND CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE FEILD . MANY PEOPLE SAW THIS AND DID NOT LIKE IT .HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED. PAYBACK IS H---! NOW WE NEED SOMEONE WHO DOES APPRECIATE THE HUSKER PROGRAM. OBVIOUSLY HE WAS MORE INTERESTED IN WHO HE COULD IMPRESS,THAN THE UNIVERSITY. SORRY WE MUST GIVE HIM 2.2 MIL. BUT HE IS GONE,AND I AM GLAD. ALSO, I,M SURE I,M NOT THE ONLY HUSKER FAN GLAD TO SEE THIS STEP TAKEN.I,D SURELY WELCOME DR. TOM BACK IN A HEARTBEAT.HE CARES ABOUT THIS STATE,AND OUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM. I NEVER CARED FOR PEDERSON FROM THE GET GO.

Posted by: Marie Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 04:00 PM
Just goes to show you Mr. Pedersen.... What goes around, COMES around!! It's about time! I hope Coach Solich is having one fine day today!

Posted by: Yoda on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:55 PM
It was in the cards. If we want to make a turn around with our team it starts here. Next step maybe a defensive coordinator would be good. Where has our team gone--not to where we want it to be.

Posted by: Michele Location: Walton on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:47 PM
They should have rode Steve out of town on a rail a long time ago. The damage he has done to the Husker football program may take a decade or more to repair. Hopefully the new AD will clean out the coaching staff and start fresh.

Posted by: Coz fan #1 on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:44 PM
Harvey is a genious. Coz finally has some breathing room. Im not saying we will be the Huskers of the 70's 80's and 90's but i am saying that we will be a better and more respected program.

Posted by: Keith Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:43 PM
And it's about time...... best to take his lackey coach with him, too.

Posted by: ronda Location: lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:38 PM
I do hate that they have to fire anyone but it is a step in the right direction. Maybe this will light a fire under the coaches to start lighting the fire to get the boys to play to there potential, which they have not been doing. You have to do what is best for the University, you want your backers there and need new recruits and the way the program was going it was going backwards at a fast clip. Hopefully this will get the attention of the coaches so they know that anyone can be let go.

Posted by: Alex/pro cosgrove #1 Location: unknown on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:34 PM
yahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Harvey is a genious. I thought all along that stinky pete was the problem. Finally coz has some breathing room. IM NOT SAY

Posted by: Clarence on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:25 PM
If Tom doesn't want the job ask Frank!

Posted by: Dave Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:25 PM
This is the best news for Huskerland!! Its a great decision! Thanks perlman!! Cosgrove and Calahan needs to go BEFORE the next game!

Posted by: Doug Location: Atkinson on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:24 PM
1st step taken. Hire Dr. Tom interim or full time until the mess is fixed. Hire Turner Gill Head and Ron Brown comes back. Peline won't so forget his return. We need a NEBRASKA GUY! Mid-season decision questionable and TOUGH. Perlman has some guts doesn't he? I have a feeling he will get the ship fixed.

Posted by: jane Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:24 PM
Perlman has made the right decision.

Posted by: Jayne Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:23 PM
What happened to Tom Osborn taking over the athletic director's possition like he was suppose to. We have the talent they just aren't playing like the team we use to know. I think that we were doing fine until Callahan had to come in and change everything he could of used the system we had and made it better. We are not a pro team so the guys should not have to play like one.

Posted by: Robb Location: Syracuse on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:20 PM
It's about time!

Posted by: MACKADO Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:16 PM
There is a god out there!! Thank You Mr. Perlman!! Callahan needs to go too!!

Posted by: Fred Location: No. Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:14 PM
its about time the university wised up, now do the same to calahan.

Posted by: Melfin Location: Blue Springs on Oct 15, 2007 at 03:13 PM
Firing Pederson is a great start...Now Perlman needs to keep going..Callahan, Cosgrove, assistant coaches everyone that has had a hand in killing the Nebraska traditions of Husker Football...Clean Slate...Couldn't get any worse..The players deserve the best and so do the fans that make Husker football what it is. Maybe Harvey should consider resigning. After all he is the one ultimately responsible.

It is about time!!! You can't blame the Husker faithful for asking for this change it is a shame that the Boys on the feild had to deal with the outpouring of emotion. The athletes on the field can only do their best. But when you get paid millions We expect more than a 4 and 3 start. Let's move forward and get Callahan out next Frank Solich was 9 and 3 and he was let go. To quote an out of work AD we will not stand for a mediocre program........ Go Big Red! and Good Luck Huskers!

YIPPIEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Posted by: Jake Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:56 PM
I think it is a great thing to have Steve Pederson out. I think that Bo Pelini will be the best fit here and take out Bill and Cosgrove the whole trio should be gone. This would be the best thing for the Nebraska Cornhusker football team and the Athletic Department.

Posted by: dan Location: Beatrice on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:55 PM
Its about time I'll bet he doesn't think he is so cool now

Posted by: W Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:55 PM
Perlman had to scapegoat somebody, but we still get to buy out Peterson's contract! What a deal for UNL!

Posted by: Dan Location: Iowa on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:53 PM
Finally.

Posted by: AJ Location: California on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:53 PM

Always good to start at the top!!!!

Posted by: Barbee Location: Clarks on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:52 PM
I am very satsified that someone has woken up and made the right choice on getting rid of Steve Pederson. I don't think he was ever the right fit for the NE Athletic Dept. and I didn't agree with many of his choices that he made while being the director.

Posted by: JH Location: Kansas on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:50 PM
FIRING PEDERSON,HOOORAY!!!!!!!!!! THATS A GOOD START!!!!

Posted by: Shannon Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:50 PM
It may be that the best candidate lives right here in Lincoln....Dr. Tom Osborne for AD!! He has the people skills, the integrity, the knowledge and he appreciates the tradition that is Nebraska Football

Posted by: Husker Fan 4 Life Location: Wyoming on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:49 PM
The firing of Steve Pedersen is only a band-aid, a quick fix to temporarily stop the "bleeding of the big red." Now it's time for Mr. Perlman to take the next step and foreclose on Callahan and Company.

Posted by: Brian Location: Lincoln on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:45 PM
It is about time for this to happen. The department has been a laughing stock since the debacle of the firing of Solich. Now Cosgrove, Callahan and the rest are finished. Bring on Osborne for AD.

Posted by: CHRISTINE on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:45 PM
Thank god!! Bring back CORNHUSKER FOOTBALL, get rid of HUSKER NATION, get rid of the new traditions and bring back the old, like the old tunnel walk, the cornhusker football player raised on Nebraska football. Peterson was poison to this program and now we can hopefully get back to what we all know and love, CORNHUSKER FOOTBALL!!

Posted by: Darrell Location: Grand Island on Oct 15, 2007 at 02:44 PM
I remember Pederson's comments reference the firing Coach Solich as "My chancler knows and fully backs my decision to fire Frank Solich." Maybe Perlman needs to go as well?

I understand that Perlman let Peterson go because of what has happened with the football team these past few years, but seriously - it's definitely not going to help us this year! We need a DC and now!
