One year ago, an accident in Lincoln killed 15-year-old Megan Churchill, and put two other teens in the hospital. One year later, family and friends are honoring her life, and spreading awareness to others about the dangers of reckless and drunk driving.
It's a labor of love. Even though it's hard work, family and friends of Megan Churchill don't mind the hassle of making sure each tent is perfect for their campout for "Angel" Megan.
Last March 26, Megan was critically injured in a car accident, when 17-year-old Ricky Turco crashed his car into a tree near 19th and Stockwell Streets.
Megan was a passenger inside, and died from her injuries on April 1.
Now, family and friends are working to honor Megan's life.
"This is an angel garden we made for Megan," said Patience Johnson as she showed the garden. "She was my best friend, and when she passed away we kind of considered her our guardian angel."
Because their angel's life was cut too short, friends like Patience Johnson are raising awareness about being safe behind the wheel, by inviting the community to a campout.
"Our goal basically is to bring awareness about reckless driving, and drinking and driving, and all the different ways you can handle the loss of a family member, or a friend," said Johnson.
"She (Patience) wants to tell Megan's story, and how good of a person she was, and what happened that day she was in the accident," said Tina Tindle, mother of Patience Johnson.
"When something like that happens, the person who gets hurt in the car accident, it also affects their family and their friends. There's many different ways to take care of that, and we hope people will come down and learn about some of those," said Johnson.
Camping out to honor Megan, and educating others on ways to be more safe, is something Patience says Megan would be proud of.
"If Megan were able to be here, to help support somebody else, she would do it because she cared about everybody," said Johnson.
The campout will be held at 926 North 8th Street in Lincoln.
It starts at 4:00 p.m. Friday, and goes through Sunday.
Every member of the community is invited and encouraged to bring their own tents, food and a donation.
Donations will be given to Megan's family to help pay for Megan's medical bills and other expenses.
Family and friends plan to make this an annual event, helping out area victims each year.
