Lincoln police are testing out segways.

Police departments have been using them across the nation. They use no gas and create no emissions.

"One of the attractive things about these is it gives you a little higher profile as you can see. I'm a little higher than all you are. That gives you a higher profile and makes you stand out, and we like our officers to do that," said Capt. Doug Srb, Lincoln Police Department.

Lincoln police are training with segways and trying them for a week, deciding whether it's something that can help here in Lincoln, like it has for more than 400 other departments across the country.

"I can see us using these for limited patrol and special events in the area," Srb said.

At 12 miles an hour, it's easy to chase down criminals anywhere with the big advance being easy interaction between police and the public.

"This is meant we're getting the cops out of the cars and we're getting them back in touch with the community," said Jamie Marsh, Segway Regional Sales Manager.

Some criticize the segways, saying a $6,000 purchase is unnecessary for a job that can be done by a bicycle, but officers say segways are more useful.

"I can do a complete turnaround here if I need to get away from somebody. On a bike I'm going to need to take a wider turn. Bikes in a crowd don't work well," said Officer Jason Hellmuth, Lincoln Police Department.

Officers say the segway isn't ideal for every situation.

"Nebraska tends to have some pretty vicious winters," Hellmuth, said. "And can you wreck it? Yes, I've proved that."

But they're optimistic they'll find plenty of uses if the department decided to buy a couple.

"We're so much more approachable. People don't want to walk up to a police car. That's usually a problem. As far as here, someone can come up and say, 'Hey officer, what's going on,'" Hellmuth said.

The segways can go more than 20 miles on a single charge, and they even recharge going down hills.

Right now LPD is just trying the segways out. They will use them at the University Place Arts Festival on May 10. If they like them, they could purchase two segways for neighborhood patrol.

wow this is really i joke i hope, im sorry but the city doesnt need to spend more money on stupid stuff like this. i feel that this perpetuates the endless cycle of laziness that is plauging the country. why cant they just walk? its not that hard, you can move around better in a crowd walking than on a big scooter. bicycles are even an excellent alternative to the car, they encourage fitness, save emissions, and dont have a range limited to 20 miles. i think this is a bad idea.

how about when they criminal runs, they shoot first ask questions later? maybe criminals would think twice if they know they'd be shot.

Sounds like a solution looking for a problem. Waste of money.

"I can do a complete turnaround here if I need to get away from somebody"? Are not you suppose to be protecting us from these people? Are we not paying you to protect us from these people? So we tax payers are suppose to pick up the $6000 check for a 12 mile an hour toy that is quicker to turn a about face when someone we are paying you to protect us from confronts you.

In Wilber were trying to pass a law to keep scooters of of the sidewalks and in Lincoln the police are trying to buy the scooters. These are just a battery powered scooter and somebody will get a foot ran over in a crowd then sue the police and the $6,000 scooter will end up costing the city $1,000,000 after the lawsuit is over. Great idea lets get 10.

As I was getting into my car this morning, I was surprised and pleased to see a Segway heading north on 48th Street! I felt very comfortable watching the person in a bright green vest negotiate into traffic very politely. I only found out it was the police trying them out from people at work. I love the idea and wish I had one! I hope it's successful. I almost felt like I was seeing a policeman on a horse - kinda special.

Sure, it's really neat and trendy, and it'll be great fun when it rains, won't it. If they weren't getting the tryout for free, they wouldn't even be doing it.

I like the idea of using the Segways mainly becauswe it puts a more personal and human face on the police officers when they are out of the cars. I believe that they definitely become more approachable. I am eager to see my first, Segway, mounted Officer.

Do Lincoln citizens have unlimited funds to give to the city in tax dollars for the cities "toys." This is a huge joke for the city to be thinking about purchasing these scooters. I have an idea! Why not recruit some officers that are in shape enough to walk!
