Some judges are hoping that cameras will put Nebraska's courts in better focus.

While other states have allowed media cameras inside courtrooms for decades to document judicial proceedings, in Nebraska they are allowed in only the state Appeals Court and Supreme Court.

A pilot project is changing that. Cameras are being allowed inside some courtrooms in Lancaster County District Court and the 1st Judicial District, which includes 11 southeastern counties.

Next week, cameras will document the trial of Richard Allen Griswold, accused of murdering a Beatrice woman.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Heavican wants cameras in more courtrooms. He says media coverage helps improve the public's understanding of how the courts work.
