It's graduation season across Nebraska, and for one Doane College student Sunday's walk across the stage was a dream come true.

80-year-old Henry Bals accepted his diploma Sunday afternoon, after decades of studying.

It was a goal he said he didn't think he'd ever accomplish.

For 80-year-old Henry Bals of Crete, Sunday was a celebration six decades in the making.

"It's special because I suppose because I'm graduating at 80-years-old. I'm graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences," said Bals.

For 63 years, three credits were all that stood in Henry's way of walking across the graduation stage, decked out in cap and gown, diploma in hand.

In that time, Henry says life got in the way.

"I started in 1945, then I joined the Navy for two years, and was on an aircraft carrier. When I got out of the Navy in two years, I went back to Doane on the GI Bill of Rights. I needed three more hours, and I had a chance to get a permanent job at the post office," said Bals.

That's what has kept henry busy for 40 years.

It wasn't until his 80th birthday, his daughter recommended he go back to school.

"You're never too old to go to school or learn a little more," said Bals.

Sunday, Henry joined nearly 550 graduates, becoming one of the oldest grads Doane has ever had.

That is something Henry's family says they are proud of.

"I'm glad over 50 years ago he made a decision that was best for his family at the time, and now he's made a decision to do what's best, or accomplish that goal that he started a long time ago," said Susan Whitman, daughter.

It is also a decision Henry says he will never forget.

"When you start in '45 and graduate in 2008, and it takes 63 years to graduate, you've got to be proud or happy," said Bals.

Henry has nine children, of which eight are college grads.

He also has 26 grandchildren who have either entered or are planning on entering college. Three are graduating this year.

Henry says he does not have any plans on using his degree for a new career. He says he's busy enough being retired and keeping active with his family.
