A Lincoln woman called police after receiving a Citibank credit card bill addressed to her mother-in-law, who died in May 2003.
Upon opening the bill, she found 69 unauthorized transactions made between May 19 and June 3, totaling $11,715.
The deceased woman's granddaughter, 21-year-old Melanie Schleiger and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Joshua Leavell, were lodged for felony theft by deception after the woman matched up the credit card purchases with new items the couple had bought, according to police.
Some of the items Schleiger and Leavell allegedly purchased with the card include a 37" high definition TV, a Wii game system and clothing. Police say they also used the card to pay for Leavell's $498 DWI court costs.
“At the time that the woman passed away the family tried to cancel all of her credit cards, but it's believed that this one was inadvertently left out and a renewal card was sent in the mail. We think the granddaughter got a hold of that and took advantage of the situation,” said Officer Katie Flood.
