Fireworks could be responsible for a home that burned down in Hickman. Authorities say a family may have improperly disposed of their fireworks and now their home has become a pile of rubble.

At least $100,000 worth of damage was caused during the blaze and the fire also ruined items meant for a special family day.

What once was a place for James and Jodie Carey to call home was turned to ashes early Saturday morning after a fire blazed through their Hickman home, leaving years of family memories in rubble.

"I smelled smoke in my house, and knew it wasn't my house, so I jumped up and ran downstairs, looked out all the windows, and we could see smoke in the street," said Tiffany Baker.

Baker lives just around the corner from the Carey's. She and her husband rushed to the home after seeing the smoke to make sure everyone had gotten out safely.

"I was really happy to see they were okay. It could have been really terrible, and I'm so glad they made it out," said Baker.

According to the State Fire Marshall's office, fireworks had been placed in a trash can just outside the northeast corner of the attached garage and he says the fireworks placed in that trash can improperly are what caused this blaze.

At least $100,000 in damage was done to the home, ruining more than just memories.

"They had a wedding today that they were concerned about, and that everything would be lost," said Baker. "They had tuxedos and dresses and gifts for the wedding and such that were all lost."

But thankfully, with the sound of their dog's bark the Carey's made it out of the home in just enough time.

"A real hero dog. Woke them up and got everybody out," Baker said.

As the family looks to start fresh with a new house; re-building memories of a home; Tiffany said she and other neighbors are trying to do all they can to help.

"The time I saw them last night, they didn't know if they'd be able to get anything out of the house like wallets, credit cards and certainly cash," Baker said. "So I just wanted to see if I could get some of the neighbors to help. All of the neighbors have been very helpful and generous."

Damage to the home is estimated at $75,000 while damage to the contents of the garage is at least $25,000.
