Organizers of a petition drive to keep the Nebraska State Fair from moving say they're getting more signatures in Grand Island than anyplace outside Lincoln.
A new state law authorizes moving the fair to Grand Island, leaving the fairgrounds in Lincoln for development by the University of Nebraska.
Roger Yant is a spokesman for Fair Vote Nebraska, which is conducting the petition drive against the move. He said Grand Island has been "a fertile ground for signatures."
Yant said organizers know more signatures have been collected in Grand Island than anyplace outside Lincoln because of the high demand for petitions in the city.
The group needs to get roughly 60,000 signatures to put the issue before voters statewide.
