The city council has defined what it means to be a "pit bull" in Minden.

City clerk and treasurer Dick Young said Thursday that an earlier city ordinance had banned dogs with some pit bull in their family backgrounds. But he said it was tough to determine the exact percentage in a particular dog.

The new ordinance defines pit bulls as any of the dogs "commonly referred to" as pit bull dog, the American pit bull terrier and American Staffordshire terrier.

Young also said visitors can bring their pit bulls to town but for only a maximum of seven days. And the dogs must be leashed.

The ordinance goes into effect next week.

In June, the city of Osceola banned pit bulls along with seven other breeds.

To N: Why do you own the breed of dog that you own? Because it has qualities that you like. Well just so you are aware the pit bull is a very loyal breed, it is fun and energetic, easy to train and eager to please, all the qualities that i look for in a breed. I do not own a pitbull because they look tough or to make myself feel like some kind of bad *** as you put it. I have aboxer and a cocker spaniel as well and my pit bull is the most obedient of all my in dogs. But I have a relationship with my dogs, one that I work on continuously. Unlike certain people I dont have dogs to just have dogs. Also just so you are aware this ISN'T about my ego, this is about protecting my dog who has done NOTHING wrong and MY rights to own the breed of my choice. I will live elsewhere, saying good ridence to close minded people like you, who would rather give their opinion on a subject that they know nothing about except for what the media tells them, then actually educate themselves!

pitty's are in the top 5 for there good tempermant, what about your dog???

To Ban a certain breed of dog is crazy, there are pit bulls who were used on site after the 911 attacks and katrina. It's not the breed who should be banned it's the irresponsible owners who shouldn't be allowed to have a dog.

I actually live in Minden and I agree that any breed can be vicious, BUT I can tell you the ordinance doesn't mean squat- the police DO NOT know the difference. I live by two diffeent households with pit bulls and the police knock on the door, ask what kind of dog it is, and when the owner says "boxer" the police leave and these dog owners laugh it off. So honestly, WHAT IS EVERYONE COMPLAINING ABOUT?!?! Nothing is going to change. It's really not a big deal.

I have 2 pits myself and never had any problems. some people need to educate themselves before judging the breed. My little sister was attacked by a Rott when she was like 3 or 4 nobody said anything then and they still dont but if it was and "pitbull" then it would be the end of the world.

What about the other breeds that are vicious? My Mom had a poodle that would make a pit bull look meek... Labs are known to attack and bite~even doxies are in the top ten list...

I agree with Kathy! The safety of our children is far more important than protecting these aggressive dogs! Some limits need to be set, before anyone else is hurt! Seriously!

I bet If I showed you all a picture of 15 different dogs you could not pick out the "pit bull".... could you? How can an you enforce a law with some breeds look very alike, could you tell what is the difference between and American pit bull and a Staforshire bull terries or what if I put in a American Bull dog. There is a big difference between these and other "pit bull breeds" you need to do your research people not sit here and listen to the media to tell you the difference. Did you know there was was 3 month baby in Texas that was killed by the family dogs and guess what breed they were.... If you guessed an pit bull type you are WRONG, the baby was attacked by a 6 month old black lab and a older pug and you say pitt bull types are vicious this was a 6 month old Black Lab now lets ban these two breeds now!!

You people are just plain stupid. Yes, an accident happened, but no matter how the facts are presented, all you can say is, "Pit bulls are bad, pit bulls are dangerous." You say this with only limited proof of pit bull attacks. Every dog has dangerous and aggressive tenancies. It's all in how you raise them, just like your kids. So think of some new rhetoric to use because the only ones to blame is ourselves, not the dog.

As a owner of a wonderful pitbull I have watched this controversy over and over. I pay a yearly fee to license my animal, I pay taxes and insurance on my property. I spend my money in this community and believe that I have the right to own a pitbull. There needs to be more breed awareness in these towns and the city about this wonderful and loving animal. Its not the dog, Its the way they are raised I believe there are alot of ignorant owners who have the wrong intentions with this animal, but there are us who honestly belive in our animals and the breed. I couldn't have asked for a more loyal and loving animal. And I also belive I have the right to own one. For those of you out there who are against pits and want them all killed then whats next? When do we say enough is enough? If Lincoln banned ownership of Pitbulls, I will take the money I spend here and MOVE, some may say good riddence, but me..well I belive in my rights.

Can a chihauhau or a weiner dog take a childs scalp off? Wake up people Pit bulls are dangerous. Have you not seen the pictures of this baby. It is a sad sad world when people think more of animals than they do a childs life or suffering. Think about it.

Posted by: Chihauhau Location: Beatrice on Aug 8, 2008 at 03:44 PM
My chihauhau is more aggressive than any pit bull that I have owned or been around.

Posted by: Sue Location: NE on Aug 8, 2008 at 03:29 PM
This is getting so old...my 18 year old weiner dog was way more aggresive than my bull terrier has ever dreamt of being...

Pit bulls are BAD!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Lincoln on Aug 8, 2008 at 12:33 PM
This is crazy! Banning mans best friend. What about trained pit bulls that are to help people with disability's?

Posted by: N Location: Lincoln on Aug 8, 2008 at 10:42 AM
I understand people who are dog lovers. What I don't understand is why people want to own a known aggressive breed of dog, esspecially when they have children. What is so important about protecting one breed of dog. If you love dogs, fine. Buy another breed. Why do people insist on having pitbulls. I seriously think it's a way for people to make themselves feel tough or that their some kind of bad ***. Get over your egos people and buy another breed if you want a dog.

Allison I don't know where you recieved your information. But I have seen the ordinances of several towns. They are not grandfathering in those dogs that have done nothing wrong. Please check the ordinances.

Posted by: Cindy Location: Lincoln on Aug 8, 2008 at 10:18 AM
What these people have to do is to try and protect inocent people and children from horrible attacks such as happened to the children in Omaha. I would like to see these dog owner try to explain to this little girl why she had to endure such pain and suffering from an animal which every one said was harmless. Look deep into her eyes and tell her these dogs are nice.

Posted by: allison Location: lincoln on Aug 8, 2008 at 09:59 AM
Come on people, most of the new ordinances say that you can't bring new dogs into the town. Those that already have them are usually exempt. So unless you are eager to run out and get one it won't affect you. If you do need one that bad then you might need to consider moving. Maybe you should quit blaming the people trying to make laws to protect us and start blaming those that can't kkep their animals in check! Hope its not your kid that get hurt next by this or any other type of dog!

Posted by: Me on Aug 8, 2008 at 09:16 AM
How do these intelligent people decide whar percent is Pit Bull? Monkey see Monkey do. How may dog bites are in this town? How nice it must be they have nothing better to make ordinances about. No crime in the city! how wonderful they can just pick on animals.

Posted by: Don on Aug 8, 2008 at 09:13 AM
Now lets get other towns in the state to follow. Ban all pit bulls plain and simple.
