LES customers will likely see a increase in their bill next month.

The LES administrative board approved a 10.1 percent retail rate increase. The increase comes after a unexpected increase in fuel and coal costs this year.

The average LES customer will see a $8.50 increase to his or her electric bill.

CEO Terry Bundy said LES plans to increase contributions to the Lincoln Action Program to help out low-income families.

"The board is proposing to nearly double that amount. That will add $33,000 for the reminder of this year and then boost 2009 contribution by $100,000, so the total will be in the range of $218,000," Bundy said.

The Lincoln City Council will now have the final say on the increase.

Meanwhile, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler issued this statement on the proposed increase.

"I am disappointed that the LES board did not hold the rate increase for customers at the 7 to 8 percent level. I will continue to meet with out city attorney and city council members to look at the options available to us to ease this burden on rate payers," he said.

If the 5% rate increase six months ago and now a 10.1% isn't enough, LES is ALREADY asking for another 1 to 4% rate increase in January! Before long only the the rich will be able to have electricty. The rest of us will have to go back to candle light at night. Welcome to 1900

Everyone is strapped right now because of the economy.Everything keeps going up except our wages.BUT......we all know when there's a power outage & we are without electricity how much we take our electricity for granted. We can't live without it,so stay home a little more often, shop a little less, drive alot less, & don't forget to eat alot less & put it in LES's pocket.

Hey Terry Bundy why don't you take a 10.1 percent pay cut for bad managing of the LES budget!!!!

I have been trying to follow this for a while and as of today, I still do not know why the increase. Is it due to storm damage, higher costs for fuel or wages? I can only believe that the screwing the American public is taking at the pumps will translate into a bankrupt country and more "poor" than ever. With diesel at over $4.50 pg there is not a trucker in the nation that can afford this stuff, and it's cheaper to make than gas. Wierd huh? The Democrats PROMISED me that if they controlled Congress, the gas prices would change. I guess I know now who the "donkey" is now.

ridiculous. how do you expect ppl to have enough money to pay all their bills. LES keeps upping the bills. Seriously...ppl with minimum wage..really can't afford paying bills like LES.

Let me just ask my employer for a 10% pay increase and see what reaction I get. We all have "unexpected" expenses, but we don't get to just "approve" more money for ourselves.

Lower wages at LES including the CEOs. Belt tightening is needed, minimum wage for all, including CEOs. If we have to go without, so should they. Their increases are every year now. Or, fire the top ppl.
