Police have released the name of a 2-year-old girl who apparently drowned in the backyard pool of a Bellevue home.

Lt. David Stukenholtz said a Bellevue officer found Katie Ramirez floating motionless in the aboveground pool on Saturday. The pool was about three blocks from the home of Katie's 14-year-old aunt. The girls were under the care of the teenager's mother, who was Katie's grandmother.

Police say the residents of the house with the pool were not home during the incident.

The 2-year-old was taken to a Papillion hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police were called to the area when the girls were reported missing.

Stukenholtz said Monday that a relative of the older girl found her at a grocery store.

This is very sad for all involved.. The grandmother and the other family who owned the pool..We will keep you in our prayers...

but I don't think the homeowners should be punished, they had a fence up and it wasn't their fault. It's different if you are the owner of a pet (bc that pet can get out of the yard) but the pool was in their back yard and the little girl wandered through the fence and into their back yard. Its really sad and I will keep their family in my prayers. Nobody deserves to go through that, and I'm sure the homeowners are very remorseful as well.

I agree with both comments! Where was the grandmother and how could she let her out of her sight?!!!! I understand toddlers are quick, but this should never have happened w/o supervision!

Why was a 2 year old out without supervision? The 14 year old was said to have been mentally challenged, I would think they would have wanted her to have some supervision too for her protection. How did a toddler get into a fencened yard with the above ground pool? Sounds like the grandmother should be in trouble for neglect for both the kids and the homeowners for not securing their yard better. If you have a pool- fence it and lock it!!! If you have kids- watch them!!! How many times does this have to happen before peple wake up and figure out these kids of things CAN be prevented???

It's there a height requirement on fences with a pool? further more how do you loose a 2 yr old? Terriable tradgedy.
