The father of a 2-month-old boy who died of severe brain injuries in 2005 has been sentenced to up to 28 years in prison.

Michael Kowal had pleaded guilty in May to manslaughter and attempted child abuse resulting in death for the June 2005 death of his son, Dawson.

Kowal had faced up to 70 years in prison. He was sentenced Monday in Douglas County District Court to 24 to 28 years.

Authorities say Dawson died of severe brain injuries caused by violent shaking at the hands of his father.
