Auditors say the Department of Health and Human Services isn't doing enough to make sure government contractors are safely transporting foster kids.
The findings, released Monday, follow the arrest early this year of a woman for having a blood-alcohol level five times the legal limit while transporting a foster child in Sarpy County.
The Legislative Performance Audit Committee suggests the department consider requiring 50-state background checks of drivers that contract with the state to transport state wards.
The audit said the department does not adequately check contractors to make sure they use child safety seats and follow other requirements.
State officials did not immediately respond to questions about the audit.
