One UNK student is spending her second hurricane away from home and her family on the gulf coast.

She's a former Ocean Springs, Miss. resident.

Brittany Smith has torn up all the pictures of her Katrina-destroyed home except one.

"It was really sad," she said.

"Driving, Lovers Lane is like a cute little lane where trees just hang over the road. Everything is gone. I mean, you would just see slabs of cement where your house was built."

The destruction happened around Brittany's mother, who as a nurse was required to stick out the storm.

"This one, everyone just left. Even though my mother knew it wasn't coming to the coast she still left just in case because you never know if it's going to shift. It's just a heart pounding thing to deal with."

And she's going through it again with Hurricane Gustav, even though her family has moved 20 miles east.

"I called them and they were evacuating at like 6:00 and they said the rain had just started, which it will just continue to go but I hope nothing happens," she said. "I'm extremely worried."

But this time her family was ready.

"Since Katrina now we have just our Rubbermaid tubs all prepared," she said.

"You tape up the toilets and you tape up the door so it doesn't flood if it does and then you put everything in the center of your house at the highest point."

But since Katrina, Brittany said possessions don't seem as important any more.

It's also changed her mind about where she wants to live.

"Should I live down there when I'm older? Probably not," Brittany said. "No."

Brittany said one-third of her family's former town was destroyed and has not been rebuilt since Hurricane Katrina.

She hasn't heard what kind of damage Gustav may have caused, but her family has evacuated to Montgomery, Alabama.
