Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman disagrees with his party's presidential candidate on whether the federal government should continue to prop up the ethanol industry.

McCain supports cutting the mandate that requires 9 billion gallons of biofuels like ethanol be blended into gasoline this year and about 11 billion gallons next year.

Republicans this week called for an end to mandates for the corn-based fuel in their national platform.

Heineman said ethanol is a key part of reducing the nation's dependence on foreign oil. Nebraska ranks second nationally in ethanol production.

Go Heineman! Thanks for having the courage to stand up for Nebraskans! I just love to see brave people who will stand up for the citizens they represent.

The use of corn-based ethanol obviously has to be a temporary measure on the way to developing other sources, that are not also used for feed for livestock, and that are not grown on land that would be damaged by those grasses, or whatever the source. As for when to stop supporting ethanol, it would be foolish to cut off the support too quickly if it resulted in setting back the research, development and production of the new crops, and their processing and marketing. If the plants that produce ethanol now, and the pumps that dispense them, can make a smooth transition to the new type of ethanol that would be best. To cut off support might undermine the progress already made. The 10 Senators who proposed a new compromise energy bill included several midwest Senators, from both parties, including Senator Nelson. They will protect rural interests as part of the new energy bill, and they tend to support "green" energy sources such as wind, solar, and geothermal also. Good for them!

Why would you want to cut the production of ethanol? Strange.
