Kearney High School has banned cell phone use on campus, saying the phones are a distraction to students.

It comes after complaints about the school banning hooded sweat shirts at the beginning of the year. School officials said students sent text messages on their cell phones from inside the pockets of their sweat shirts, which could let them share answers on tests.

Parents and students quickly flooded the principal's office with complaints that they found out about the sweat shirt policy after their back-to-school shopping was complete.

That policy was rescinded, and the cell phone ban enacted.

Students must keep their cell phones turned off during the school day or the phones can be confiscated.

What purpose do kids have with cell phones anyway. What could be so important that can't wait till later. When I grew up we didn't have cell phones in the '80s but somehow we survived and I won't buy my kids a cell phone and they will survive also. Sometimes technology outdoes its good. In Wilber in the schools they don't allow hoodies, or cell phones as to many people are using technolgy to cheat on tests. They found people using cell phones for answers and even mp3 players with the answers recorded on them. They should go to a dress code like cathlic schools and that would solve the problem. And kids don't need cell phones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this seems like a good idea, but kids will still use them or at least try to get away with it. i think kids do need cell phones, in case of emergencies only.

to the girlfromhope, I would bet you do not have a child that walks home from school. I would actually be surprised if you have an older child period. I do agree that a child or a teacher for that matter does not need to use a cell phone at school, but having one there with it turned off until AFTER school hours is not a problem. It is a safety measure for the walk home or a way to let me know she is going to friend's house. Teachers do not have the right to take someone's property for the rest of the school year, and I would be changing schools if you were principal. My daughter will keep her phone off and in her backpack until after she leaves the property like she has since she got it, but she will take it daily to school.

I think cell phones should be banned in every educational building across the nation. There is no reason any child should have a cell phone in the first place, and if they have them at school they should be taken away and the only person that should be able to get them back is the parent. Then the parent should be told the next time the student is caught with the cell phone at school it will be kept until the end of the school. year

Because this worked so well when LPS started doing it, or any other school. Cell phones will still be used, often unnoticed.
