The flap over Peter Rabbit the horse has turned deadly serious in the small Nebraska town of Hickman.

City Councilman Dave Dykmann says a woman left a phone message at city offices on Wednesday saying "if I had a gun I'd shoot Dave Dykmann and the mayor." The woman apparently was upset with the council's recent decision to uphold its ban on livestock in city limits and force the 32-year-old horse to leave the pasture where he was born.

Peter Rabbit's 76-year-old owner, Harley Scott, has said the horse is too old to move, and the horse remained in the pasture.

Officials have tried to ticket Scott, but Dykmann says the family seems to have left town.

Harley Scott's son, Jack Scott, declined to comment on Thursday.

Here's to the "jeff" who said that he escaped hickman. You are writing from lincoln, you really escaped! The horse is not the issue. The issue is with ego-centric city councilmen who are more concerned with making money off of upperclass Lincoln citizens than the unity of small town communities. You cant ask a 32 year old horse to move its home because uppity lincoln citizens moved the city limits with new developements. Jeff hickman is lucky to get rid of you. Next time take Dykmann with you!!!

I don't know what you pay your city council members over there, but you should at least cut it in half if this is all they do for you Hickman. Can you make this state look any dumber to the rest of the world?

Seriously, does the Hickman council really have nothing else to worry about than a horse? Probably one person wanted a chicken for a 4-H project that would have ended up for dinner anyway, and couldn't have it so decided a 37 year old horse, on the edge of town, would have to pay for it. Leave the horse and owners alone!!

I think we need a law to ban anyone named Dykmann from the town and that the horse should stay.If you have enough land it shouldn't matter where your property lies.Doesnt the city council have more important things to do than to bully an old horse and an even older man....what a NATONAL joke this town has become.I myself am looking to move to a town that is less of a dictatorship

why would anyone want to live in Hickman anyway? I escaped the place years ago and never looked back. This little debacle is one of the reasons why I left. People in Hickman are so stubborn and petty that this thing should have been resolved months ago, but no, they got to show that they will not be dictated to by a horse. Geeze, the animal is 32 years old--a prestigious age, and it will be dead by natural causes soon anyway, so let the poor thing die a natural death for pete's sake. But no, these morons will go on maintaining their stance, after all, Hickman is getting all the publicity over this. Might as well be known for a place that doesn't have horse sense!

this is ridiculous. people in the town should simply get a petition circulated to put a "grandfather clause" into the city ordinance, and allow this particular horse to stay put. Then don't allow new so-called farm animals to be brought in. The horse is obviously mostly a pet, and the horse and the man are old enough to be left alone. We have a town of about two thousand, with a university of about two thousand, and there are horses, and even a sale barn with lots, inside the city limits. people should learn to coexist with others who are a bit different. we have Amish people tying up horses at special hitching areas at several spots in town also. why would people want to be so mean in Nebraska and make fools of themselves when some outside feature press gets the photo of a nice peaceful old horse being persecuted. it would be a cute story if people petitioned to let the horse stay, and the city officials gave in. otherwise, they are just official bullies.

All this for a horse. We have had so much more news worthy things happening. People are homeless because of hurricanes, the economy is in the crapper, teenage kids are being left at hospitals. Leave the horse alone and worry about something else. As to the threat, there always has to be one crazy grandma in a small town.
