These days as Salvation Army driver Ron Patz makes his rounds to collect donations, he is coming across more couches.

"Honestly it has been really difficult because as soon as that came into effect people have been calling us left and right. I go out to their homes, and it's just ripped up torn up dog stained cat hair everywhere," said Patz.

Patz says he cannot accept some of them because they are in no condition to be resold.

In fact, since the ban was approved, he says he rejects almost half a dozen more a week.

Sometimes that does not go over well with those trying to get rid of their couch.

"They get mad at us and they come here over the weekend and drop it off," Patz said.

According to Patz, they have also seen an increase in the number of couches and other unusable furniture being dumped off at the store after hours.

"I think they probably think we're a junk site, and we're not," said Patz.

Store manager Rachel Krueger says it has gotten so bad at times that she dreads coming into work in the morning.

"It's a daily basis frustration to come to work everyday at 7:30 in the morning, to have my dock area totally trashed. Sometimes it takes an hour or two hours on Monday morning if it's a weekend where we literally have to pick up trash that somebody decided to drop off on us," said Krueger.

But Patz says it is not just time they waste, they are also wasting money.

According to the manager, they spend at least $75 to have their dumpster hauled away, which they have to do four to five times a week.

In addition to that, when it gets really bad they have to send truck loads of stuff to the landfill which can cost them between $40 to $100 a trip.

"Too many dump runs too much money. We're trying to save money and it's not working," said Patz.

Patz says the more money needed to get rid of junk, means less money used towards a program which helps men stay off of alcohol and drugs.

Officials at the landfill say they typically charge about $11, if someone hauls their couch out to the landfill.

Several garbage collection companies we checked with can also haul away unwanted couches by reservation and for a small fee.

I am paying $75 to have a love seat hauled off today. I volunteer in a thrift shop. You would not believe the sofas that come in. Urine stained. Lice and flea infested. Yes, we do get many nice ones but the ones that are dumped are not nice. THEY ARE TRASH. THEY CANNOT BE SAVED.

I love the ban! Most of the people that have a couch on the porch also tend to have rundown dilapidated buildings, weeds and other junk on their property. The couch ordinance is a very easy way to get these people to do a little cleanup on their property. And while it is the individuals choice, they must remember that the outward appearance of their property affects their neighbors property values as well. Bravo to the City Council for passing this ordinance, no thanks to Ken Svboda.

WHY doesn't the city set up some kind of drop off site to help these people get rid of these couches or have a couple days where people can haul off the couches to the dump at no charge???

Way to go City Council! Make a ban and don't do anything about the mayhem. Let the charities shoulder the burden of your distaste for indoor furniture outside. Bravo!!! I have an idea...How about the city pays for a security camera outside the Salvation Army? The city could ticket anyone that drops off a couch then use that money to pay the Salvation Army for their trips to the landfill.

Maybe they should hire a security guard. The money they save from not having to clean up and haul away would pay for one. Eventually people would get the message and stop.

The police have enough to deal with without this! Earlier this year the council was talking about the weed ban. The police could not or would not enforce this. We all know that they are short handed. This is a stupid ordinance. The council needs to wise up.

Way to go city council. Now your decision is even hurting the Salvation Army. Don't you feel like a bunch of jerks. It's ok it was a life changing decision and it had to be made for the safety of our porches right?

first, who cares how long it takes you to clean off your dock in the mornings, every time i am in there you have three people standing around doing nothing, while I stand at the counter waiting for a cashier that has not been trained.. If you askk me a little work wont hurt you... Then you complain about the junk people give you, when all you do is turn around and sell junk ,very over priced.. I and sure many agree with you step up do your part don't complain!! Take the couches give them away to people who need them, make a good name for your self and please be smart enough to relize the people you are complaining are also your customers or a good chance your former customers!!! I have not asked you to pick up anything but you can bet I wont be buying anything from you again...
