The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has received a $9.3 million grant for a statewide program to improve the math skills of at-risk students in kindergarten through third grade.

The National Science Foundation awarded the grant to start a program called "Nebraska Math." The program is a partnership involving UNL, public school systems in Lincoln, Grand Island and Papillion-La Vista and 14 rural Educational Service Units.

The program will build on a four-year-old UNL program which as well was funded by a foundation grant. That program works to improve Nebraska middle school students' math achievement.

Nebraska Math will also create three programs to help teachers learn more about methods of teaching math.
