Bambi may be cute. But on the road, he and his kin can be kill.

Cary Toomey knows about this all to well. Sunday afternoon he was driving on Van Dorn Street when his vehicle collided at 50 miles per hour with a deer in the middle of the road.

"I didn't even know I hit a deer until right at the last second," Toomey said. "I didn't even see it. It just popped out of the ditch so fast, there was nothing I could do."

He and his two young sons were wearing seat belts. Instead of swerving, Toomey hit the deer straight on, something Terry Wagner a Lancaster County Sheriff said was key to their walking away alive and unharmed.

"If you swerve to the right, you could roll over into a ditch," Wagner said. "If you swerve to the left, there could be oncoming traffic so you could be putting yourself and others in more danger than just hitting the breaks, grabbing the wheel, making sure you're buckled in and hitting the object in front of you."

Wagner said there have been 365 car-deer accidents since January 1, 2008. That's double last year's 182 during the same time period. Injuries from these accidents have also increased from eight through November 10 of last year, to 13 so far this year.

Wagner said drivers should slow down and be prepared if they see deer along the side of the road.

"They are a pack animal and they move in herds", Wagner said. "So if you see one, there's a good chance you're going to see more."

Toomey's accident caused an estimated $8,000 in damage to his car. He said he thinks it will likely be totaled by his insurance appraiser.

According to a nationwide study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, insurance claims for crashes with animals are three times higher in November than they are from January to September, due to the fact that the whitetail rut is taking place. The study also found that 60% of people killed during a collision involving a vehicle and animal were not wearing a seat belt.

Toomey said from now on he'll drive slower in heavily forested areas. But for now he's counting his blessings that it was just the deer and the car that took the beating and that he and his little boys walked away alive.

"I was just amazing how the front end just exploded," Toomey said. "I consider myself fortunate that everyone ended up healthy and nobody got hurt."

My dad works for the NDOR and he's been picking up dead deer on the road like crazy. There was a doe that got hit by a car and her mate wouldn't leave and wouldn't let the doe be taken to the ditch for the coyotes.

I hit a deer with a SUV going about 40 mph, this guy is right, the vehicle will most likely be totaled by insurance. The damage done to mine was less that 4,000. The cost of replacing airbags increased the cost to over 8,ooo. I am glad everyone is unharmed.

My husband is a deer hunter and what alot of people that are out there complaining about don't realize is they have a natural instinct to breed just like humans do. They have gone into rut meaning the bucks are on the move after the does that are in heat. Slow down and take out some time to enjoy the wildlife in Nebraska and slow down a little bit life is to short to have it whiz by in an instant and possible lose ones life or a loved ones from speeding a little to get home a little faster.

I'd shoot these nasty things all day long if it were legal, and give the carcasses to the state for low-income meat distribution.

and that a good point brent, they are VERY tame. they are barely afraid of humans anymore. thats why we see them in cities and near highways so much more. and of course, we are moving deeper into their habitat.

I was on the way home from the Husker game Saturday night around 10:30 and a deer was walking through the intersection of Rosa Parks way and Highway 77. The deer was on the overpass and I couldn't believe it was just strolling along not even minding the traffic. Way too many deer around this year.

back in the 50's and 60's it was more common to hit cows than deer with your car. and it was a big deal when you saw a deer.

Let's do the hunting thing it's alot cheaper than using a vehicle and it will drop the population of these animals roming around.

I have hit 3 deer in the last year--and I have not seen any of them until they were on my windsheild. One of the down sides of commuting, I guess.

I'm also a deer hunter and I totally agree, maybe if they reduce the Fee to receive a deer permit, more people would be interested in purchasing deer permits. Anyone can purchase a Seasons Choice along with a regular permit. They have added more chances of getting deer. Wake up and pay attention and if you don't know what your talking about before you come on here and run your mouth then stay off of here. LET'S GO HUNTING

Yes the number of tags per permit have increased for this hunting season, but the number of hunters in the field is dropping consistantly on an annual basis. As long as future generations are not becoming involved in hunting of large game, or any game for that matter, you will see an increase in game populations, and unfortunately you will see an increase in diseased animals as well as car/animal crashes. Game and Parks should continue to strive for more youth education and youth hunting events, and I feel they should consider lowering the costs of permits for both in state and out of state hunters, making Nebraska an economical choice for hunters around the country.

Hey Marvin, where ya been. Every deer permit bought a person buys in this area comes with a free bonus tag allowing the hunter to harvest an additional antlerless animal. Also, a hunter can purchase as many antlerless tags, (bonus tags included)for the hunting units of southeast Nebraska. Thanks for your uneducated insight into the problem.

I just had to share my story. Today I was on my lunch break sitting in my van in front of Clinton Elementary school (29th Holdredge and a deer walked right past my van!!!) I could not believe my eyes. So I called into the school and had the others look out of the window. Anyway, I was just wondering had there been any other sightings in North Lincoln. I was just wondering how much further this deer made it. He had to have just crossed 27th street during lunch hour traffic, then across Holdredge.

WHY CAN'T THE LIMIT OF DEER BE RAISED FOR HUNTING? IT ONLY MAKES SENSE TO ME TO HELP CUT DOWN THE NUMBER OF DEER CAUSING ACCIDENTS. HAVE THE DEER PROCESSED AND COOKED UP FOR THE HOMELESS PEOPLE. GOD KNOWS THAT THE HOMELESS POPULATION IS VERY HIGH. JUST A WAY TO HELP OUR HUNGRY HOMELESS PEOPLE. NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE EVEN CARE THAT WE HAVE HOMELESS PEOPLE ON THE STREETS OR EVEN CARE TO HELP THEM ALITTLE OR ALOT. GOD BLESS THE USA SOMEHOW........
