Two Omaha firefighters responding to an injury accident on Interstate 80 have been hospitalized after being struck by an oncoming sport-utility vehicle.

They were called to the scene of another crash late Saturday and were working along the eastbound shoulder of I-80 when the SUV lost control and slid into them.

Omaha fire officials say one of the firefighters was briefly pinned against a utility pole while the other was tossed more than 50 feet down an embankment.

The firefighters were taken to Creighton University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Fire officials say icy conditions were to blame for several collisions early Sunday.
