The Nebraska State Patrol has destroyed a World War II-era hand grenade found in the northeast Nebraska town of Creighton.

Creighton officials say a garbage service worker found the grenade in the back of a garbage truck Wednesday afternoon.

The bomb squad was called in, and members responded from Grand Island.

They took it to a Creighton gun range and blew it up with their own explosives.

The authorities are trying to find out how the grenade ended up in the truck and who's responsible.

Maybe it was an inert grenade; a lot of those had the powder taken out of them and had the fuse in the head burned out, basically just paperweights. If you wanted to get rid of a live one, you could have just chucked it out into a lake, or called the police and say you just found one.
