The Lincoln Fire Department was called to the Zion Presbyterian Church at 848 D Street around five o'clock Saturday morning.

Deputy Chief Pat Borer tells 10/11 News that flames were seen coming from the basement of the Zion Church when they arrived.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue does not yet know the cause of the blaze, but they believe it started in a basement kitchen. Deputy Chief Borer says flames then spread to the main floor, and were fifteen to twenty feet high at times.

Borer says most of the roof has collapsed, and the main floor of the church collapsed into the basement.

Fire crews warn that the church's towers that are left standing are swaying and may collapse. As a result of the possible collapse, 9th Street will be closed between C and K Streets until further notice.

It took nine Lincoln Fire units about three hours to put out the flames.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue also reports that two firefighters were injured in fighting the blaze. One firefighter suffered a slight back injury and the other suffered smoke inhalation. Both have been treated for their injuries.

Borer says fire units will be on the scene the rest of the day checking for hot spots.

The Zion Presbyterian congregation met Saturday morning and has decided that they will hold their Sunday services at Saint Paul United Methodist Church. This will be a temporary solution until the church members decide on a long-term solution.

We will have more information as it becomes available.

First Off,My sincere Condolence for your Loss of Historic Building,Remember that a Church is the "PEOPLE" and you are all going to be O.K. Second of all, when I pulled up your Pictures of your Church, I was shocked to see the complete resemblence of the way your sturture is an almost dead ringer for the Morning Star Baptist Church, that mysteriously burnt up in a 4 alarm fire here. During Feb (Black history month) and a Predominatly Black-American congregation Our ATF investigation was inconclusive as to what caused it. You may want to contact Portland, Fire Dept and compare notes. These folks here also are at my urging, saved many of the Bricks to use as part of the rebuilding process on the new church,Donations keep rolling in. God Bless you all, And God's Blessing.

My great-grandfather was one of the founders of Zion Church. 4 generations of my family, including mine, grew up in the church. As a young girl I remember all of my family, grandmother, grandfather, aunts, uncles, parents, and cousins attending Zion Sunday service. We would all then go down my my great aunt's house just around the block and have our Sunday meal. I would remember staring at the mural painted in the back of the church and the stain glassed windows. In the summer the sun can through the windows and caste colored light across the church. I also remember the Christmas Eve services. We all light candles and sang Holy Night. It was a very powerful feeling. I was the last person in my family to be confirmed at Zion church before we merged with the Presbyterian church. Downstairs we had a picture going back to the first confirmation class at the church. You could look and see my whole family history. I know those pictures were taken down when the merger happened back in ~1997. I was told they were in a box in the back of the church which was in the pastor's study. I heard that that was the only area of the church that may have a few salvageable items. I hope those pictures are there. Zion was a remind of my childhood, my family history, and how my family loved each other as well as Jesus. The burning of Zion meant much to my family. It was like losing a peice of our family hertiage.
