Concordia University and the Jones National Bank in Seward have a great thing going.
They joined forces in 2003 to creat a fine arts series and this past weekend, young graphic artists took part in a workshop experience that was beneficial to both the students and the community.
It was an amazing opportunity for the senior graphic design students at Concordia University. They were able to work side-by-side with one of the premier graphic designers in America.
Stefan Bucher took some time away from his studio in Los Angeles to lead in the creation of a public mural in downtown Seward.
The paint was flowing freely as Concordia students soaked up every word from this well-renowned illustrator.
"Not only do we get to work with a designer that has his own studio, it's also in a different part of the country. So not only are we hearing things in the real world, but a different part of the world," said Brenda Ard, Concordia Student.
Jones National Bank takes pride in being involved in the fine arts series.
"Part of what we were trying to do is enhance the already excellent programs at Concordia and help them bring in a resource they might not have had otherwise," said Max Wake, Jones National Bank.
One of the leaders in the Concordia art department saw a chance to help his students.
"When I see something that is kind of exciting and cool I like to share it, and especially for the students to have the chance to interact with someone who's out there already and is doing it regularly," said Paul Berkbigler, Concordia University.
And it's what he's done on a regular basis on his Web site that provided the inspiration for this mural. In 2006, Bucher started creating monsters out of an ink blot that he splatters with air from there, the rest is just pure creativity.
"He's taken what he's done and it's become so popular and he's made these huge because all of his drawings are 8 1/2 by 11 so this is really exciting because not only for me but I'm sure for him because this is the biggest that they'll ever be displayed," Ard said.
"I wanted to create a mural that fits the fabric of the town and fits in with the existing visual artist program -- the murals that are already around town," said Stefan Bucher, Graphic Designer.
"I am so thankful that he made the trip out to little Seward, Nebraska to be with the Concordia University students," Ard said.
If you'd like to check out the monster mural for yourself, it's just north of the Seward County courthouse on sixth street.
Bucher's visit coincides with the release of his new book and dvd 100 Days of Monsters. For more information, click here.
