The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has their eyes on the future. The new, 20-year plan to recruit, develop and retain hunters and anglers in the face of alarming declines in the number of Nebraskans participating in outdoor activities.
Justin Pekarek is a true outdoor enthusiast. He grew up in tiny, Staplehurst, Neb. with just two things on his mind: baseball and hunting.
From as early as he can remember, Justin's dad George was right there beside him, teaching him an appreciation for the great outdoors.
"It all started out when Justin was a little kid. I got him goin' huntin'. As soon as he was old enough to deer hunt these are some of our trophies we got," said George Pekarek as he motioned to a shelf of trophies.
Justin's early years were filled with time spent outdoors. "Bottom line -- it was a picture perfect deal goin' on we had the huntin' in the Fall and baseball in the Spring," he said.
Justin's love of baseball led him to Lincoln where he fulfilled a life-long dream and played for the Huskers. Justin's playing days are now behind him, but that just means more time out in the wilderness.
Ralph Wall of the Nebraska State Game and Parks hopes for more people like Justin in the future.
"In the past, Nebraska had a great heritage of doing things together in the great outdoors. Today there's just so many things competing for your entertainment hour, but the quality of those experiences hasn't changed and that's what we can't lose touch of," Wall said.
Justin said he will always love hunting in Nebraska.
"There's nothing I'm more thankful for in life than having the opportunity to hunt with my family and getting out here and enjoying the beauty," he said.
