Pam Iaquinta has three children, ages 12, 10 and 9, but she usually only lets her oldest, Sophia, stay home alone.
"When Sophia turned ten she took a supersitter's class," said Pam Iaquinta, Lincoln. "After she had taken the class, I felt comfortable that she could stay home because they had gone through the training of what to do in an emergency."
Most experts say a child should be 12 years old before parents leave them at home, but school counselor Angie Buresh said that varies with maturity, and your child will let you know when they're ready.
'"They may ask. They may show you signs that they're responsible. Do they know or have you guys rehearsed a family safety plan? If they don't know what to do if something catches fire, or know where to go or a neighbor to see, then they're probably not ready," said Angie Buresh, counselor at Hill Elementary.
There are some other guidelines parents can use. First, do a trial run. Leave your child at home while you run to the store, the next time stay away longer.
Next, role play scenarios with your child, like what they would do if someone was breaking in or if they got hurt or became sick.
Another tip make sure your child knows how to reach you throughout the day. They should have access to your work and cell phone number.
Also, have them check in with you periodically, and make sure they have a list of emergency phone numbers, including a family friend or neighbor
Finally, set lots of rules.
"I would not have neighborhood friends over because you get too involved in play. It's unstructured time. It's better to have a schedule and agenda the whole day for a child,"

"We set certain guidelines when she's home alone," Iaquinta said. "No answering the front door. No use of the computer. No answering the phone."
Iaquinta said she knows if those rules are followed, her child should be safe home alone.
Another thing parents should be mindful of is whether you want your children to use a stove or oven when they're home alone.
Buresh said a microwave is easier and safer for children, or you may want to prepare their food ahead of time.
Finally, she said being trained in CPR or first aid would be another plus for you and your child.
