It was like a scene right out of a movie…
That’s what I thought after I gave birth to Jordan just over a week ago.
It started Wednesday morning (May 7) around 7:40. That’s when I had my first contractions. They were seven minutes apart. So I called Todd, who was on his way to work in Omaha, to let him know what was going on. But because I had false contractions two days before, and had Todd come all the way back to Lincoln – I was a little reluctant to tell him to come home again – so I told him I’d call him back.
But before I knew it – my contractions intensified, and when I timed them again- they were less than four minutes apart. I called Todd and told him I wasn’t sure if I could wait for him to make it back to Lincoln. I needed to get to the hospital right away.
He called our friend, who is also the five and ten o’clock producer at 10-11 and she agreed to come to my rescue. In the meantime, Tyler woke up, but the contractions were too great. I couldn’t change his smelly, soggy diaper and I certainly couldn’t change his clothes. I did manage to get him a cup of juice instead.
By the time my producer, Julie, came storming in my house - my contractions were 3 minutes and 30 seconds apart! She grabbed Tyler, who was still in his pajamas and his smelly diaper (neither of us grabbed my bag I had carefully packed in advance) and we jumped in the car. It seemed as if she hit every bump between my house and the hospital. And when traffic began to slow down us down – she didn’t let it stop her… she sped through the turning lane! After what seemed like an eternity, we finally made it to the hospital. Julie ran out of the car and grabbed a wheelchair and pushed me and Tyler to the front desk. An older gentleman took over pushing the wheelchair and took me to Labor and Delivery.
The nurses checked me into a room and began to check me over and told me the baby could come any minute now. But Todd was still driving back from Omaha! Then the nurse had more good news for me. It was too late to get any pain relieving drugs, like an epidural. I couldn’t believe what I heard. I’m not the kind of person that planned to toughen childbirth out, I needed some help! And I wasn’t sure if I could have the baby without it!
But I really didn’t even get a chance to take that news in because before I knew it – the delivery team came rushing in. Apparently they usually get more time to prepare than what I gave them – so everyone was in a hurry.
I looked up and saw my doctor and she gave me a reassuring smile - then broke my water. More contractions! She then asked me if I was ready to push. I wasn’t.
Then Todd walked in- and grabbed my hand. But I still didn’t want to push. Not without the epidural!
But the body is an amazing thing. And when a baby is ready to come…you can’t help but do what it tells you to do – push! So four big pushes later, our baby was born and suddenly - nothing else mattered. My son was here and he was healthy and beautiful!
I checked in at 9:00…and had Jordan Christopher at 9:45. But we made it!
For the rest of the night…the nursing staff kept telling me what a commotion I caused and how I barely made it in time. All I could say was I knew our baby was anxious to meet us! Now he had. What a day!
If you have any funny or memorable stories you’d like to share about your baby’s arrival – I’d love to read about it.
Talk to you soon…
