It was like a scene right out of a movie…

That’s what I thought after I gave birth to Jordan just over a week ago.
It started Wednesday morning (May 7) around 7:40. That’s when I had my first contractions. They were seven minutes apart. So I called Todd, who was on his way to work in Omaha, to let him know what was going on. But because I had false contractions two days before, and had Todd come all the way back to Lincoln – I was a little reluctant to tell him to come home again – so I told him I’d call him back.

But before I knew it – my contractions intensified, and when I timed them again- they were less than four minutes apart. I called Todd and told him I wasn’t sure if I could wait for him to make it back to Lincoln. I needed to get to the hospital right away.

He called our friend, who is also the five and ten o’clock producer at 10-11 and she agreed to come to my rescue. In the meantime, Tyler woke up, but the contractions were too great. I couldn’t change his smelly, soggy diaper and I certainly couldn’t change his clothes. I did manage to get him a cup of juice instead.

By the time my producer, Julie, came storming in my house - my contractions were 3 minutes and 30 seconds apart! She grabbed Tyler, who was still in his pajamas and his smelly diaper (neither of us grabbed my bag I had carefully packed in advance) and we jumped in the car. It seemed as if she hit every bump between my house and the hospital. And when traffic began to slow down us down – she didn’t let it stop her… she sped through the turning lane! After what seemed like an eternity, we finally made it to the hospital. Julie ran out of the car and grabbed a wheelchair and pushed me and Tyler to the front desk. An older gentleman took over pushing the wheelchair and took me to Labor and Delivery.

The nurses checked me into a room and began to check me over and told me the baby could come any minute now. But Todd was still driving back from Omaha! Then the nurse had more good news for me. It was too late to get any pain relieving drugs, like an epidural. I couldn’t believe what I heard. I’m not the kind of person that planned to toughen childbirth out, I needed some help! And I wasn’t sure if I could have the baby without it!

But I really didn’t even get a chance to take that news in because before I knew it – the delivery team came rushing in. Apparently they usually get more time to prepare than what I gave them – so everyone was in a hurry.

I looked up and saw my doctor and she gave me a reassuring smile - then broke my water. More contractions! She then asked me if I was ready to push. I wasn’t.
Then Todd walked in- and grabbed my hand. But I still didn’t want to push. Not without the epidural!

But the body is an amazing thing. And when a baby is ready to come…you can’t help but do what it tells you to do – push! So four big pushes later, our baby was born and suddenly - nothing else mattered. My son was here and he was healthy and beautiful!
I checked in at 9:00…and had Jordan Christopher at 9:45. But we made it!

For the rest of the night…the nursing staff kept telling me what a commotion I caused and how I barely made it in time. All I could say was I knew our baby was anxious to meet us! Now he had. What a day!

If you have any funny or memorable stories you’d like to share about your baby’s arrival – I’d love to read about it.

Talk to you soon…

I just gave birth on May 14 to my second son! I wasn't sure the labor was real either and so when I called my husband at work that night, I told him not to hurry. :) We got to the hospital at 10:30pm and Joshua Jordan was born at 11:05pm. My doctor barely made it there and the nurses were scrambling, but everything worked out fine! Now we have two beautiful boys, Caleb Michael, who's 3 1/2 and Joshua Jordan, who will be 2 weeks tomorrow. By the way, Caleb was so excited to find out you were having a baby boy in May, too, and was super excited when they announced it on the news the day you had him! :) Congratulations to your family! Best wishes and hopefully you're getting some sleep at night! :)

Congratulations! When my son decided to make his entrance into the world 26yr ago, he didn't even wait for the delivery table! The nurse had checked me and said "nothing was happening" and about 5-7 min later I felt the need to push. What a commotion that caused when my son came while I was still on the gurney. My daughter who is 20 was in a rush also. I was at the hospital in plenty of time but the doctor was 25mi away and the roads in Jan. were icy. The nurses were blowing in my face and pinching my arm to make me think of something other than pushing--DID NOT WORK!!! The doctor barely made it into the delivery room and she was born. I never had the chance to get an edpidural in or the time to get it to work with my deliveries. I have 4 children and the longest labor was 6hr and the shortest was 3hr. Good thing I didn't live far from the hospital. Being a nurse I realize how important it is to listen to a mother when she says "IT'S TIME TO GO!!!!" Have a great motherhood!!!

When my Daughter Evamarie was born, she came 2 months early, I knew she was going to come quick, I rushed to the hospital, and they examined me and told me it would be awhile yet, and I kept saying I don't think so, I had no desire to push or anything, 15 minutes after I arrived, and before the doctors got there, I was in the delivery room, the nurses were hurrying around, getting things ready, my water broke, and I said hey you guys something is going on down there, the nurse who was putting the blankets in the warmer, turned around (it was her first day at work) and low and behold, Ms Evamarie, came slipping out, and on to the blankets the nurse was holding. Had the nurse not been there, she would have landed on the floor. To this day she has a little birthmark on her forehead that comes out when she gets mad or excited. It made the nurses day, and I was just glad it was over with. Evamarie is now 27 yrs old, and will be married to the best son in law around on June 28th.

Something very similar happened to me at the birth of our son. When my water broke July 8th 2005 at 2:20 p.m., I foolisly thought I had plenty of time to call my husband from work to come and get me. By the time he came home, my contractions were 5 minutes appart. By the time we hit 48th street, I had to push!! Boy, that scared me to death!! We arrived at the hospital at 3:30 p.m. and our son was born at 3:40p.m., just a little too close for comfort for me to say the least!! Labor with my daughter lasted 14 hours, I wasn't prepared for 1.5 hrs with my son. But like you said, he was anxious to meet us too. They both are blessings to us, as I know your boys are to you and your husband!!

Congratulations! I elected to have a drug-free birth with my daughter and will do the same when our second child comes in September. I know exactly what you went through, but for me anyway, I wouldn't change a thing! A friend of mine shared this quote with me and I love it! "We have a secret in our culture and it's not that birth is painful. It's that women are strong"- Laura Stavoe Harm

Almost 46 years ago our twins were our surprise. Dr. didn't know we were going to have them nor of course did we. After one was born, I had asked the Dr. what I had, and he told me a little boy. I was happy, as we had a 2 year old little girl. It wasn't long after I had asked the first time, I asked again and he told me a little girl..I thought I had had a litter..ha My husband was sitting outside the delivery room, and thought something had happened to me or the "baby", as the nurses were rushing back into delivery. The Dr. came out and started apologizing to my husband, took him into the delivery room, and said "you didn't see me carry any baby in here, and these are both yours". Fred was somewhat surprised, but thankful nothing had happened to us. They also were born on my Dad's birthday, which made it really a special day. They always celebrated their grandpa, and miss that since he is no longer here, but what special gifts God gave us. Congrats on your two boys.

I remember my first daughters birth. I had contractions starting @ 2:30 a.m. and called the hospital @ 4 a.m. Got to the hospital @ 5:15 due to a blizzard on March 7, 1995, and she was born @ 6:53 a.m. that morning. She was born on her great grams birthday! Now her birthdays are special in rememberance of great gram, who did pass on a yr. ago this May. Also the weirdest thing is, my birth time is 6:53 p.m. and my first dtrs. birth time is 6:53 a.m. How cool is that? I didn't know this until I recently saw my birth certificate! And with my second dtr., the same doctor broke my water @ 9 a.m. and she didn't want to come see everyone. We were getting worried! She finally made the entrance into the world @ 5.33 p.m. With that much leway from 9 a.m. to 5:33 p.m., The placenta fell apart and I am not superwoman but didn't have epidural with both girls, ended up almost having surgery due to placenta didn't deliver and had a d&c done right there in the delivery rm. I wish u althe best!

Serese, When two of my kids were born, I converted the labor room into the labor room, delivery room and the recovery room. Our daughter was the fastest. My husband walked out to get a drink and he then heard the nurse holler for a O.B. kit and stat! The other one which was a boy was born so quick that he literally flew out and sprang back on the cord. For the longest time his nickname was bullet. with three of our four kids the doctor was 5 minutes late and I was the only one that had looked at the clock to see what time they were born as the nurses were to busy taking care of the babies and myself. The doctor that had been called to deliver them is gone now, bless his soul. He was my favorite dr. the youngest boy, when he was born he was not breathing and turning blue, the mask did not work and the nurses had to go through three of them before they found one that worked. He is fine now, just a bit of heart problems and learning disability, but the sunshine of our eyes.

Congratulations! Was a natural birth as bad as you though it would be? How about as horrible as everyone makes it sound? What advice would you give to women who wanted to have a natural birth? Or women who were afraid of having a natural birth?

YES SERESE, I DO KNOW WHAT YOU WERE GOING THRU I GOT TO THE HOSPITAL WITH MY SECOND CHILD AT 6:30 P.M. AND THE BABY WAS BORN AT 7:15. NO TIME TO PREPARE FOR ANYTHING AND AT THAT TIME THEY JUST PUT YOU UNDER BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE TIME TO GIVE ME ANYTHING. IT WAS NICE TO GIVE NATURAL CHILDBIRTH THOUGH AND I WOULD GO THRU IT AGAIN IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. BUT SINCE THAT BABY HAS GIVEN ME 4 GRANDCHILDREN I CAN NOT HAVE ANY MORE CHILDREN. I JUST ENJOY THE 7 GRANDCHILDREN I HAVE AND THE 2 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN THAT I HAVE. HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL AND ARE TAKING IT EASY TOO. I JUST WISH THAT THE 2 DAUGHTERS I HAD WOULD OF NOT MADE ME A GRANDMOTHER SO SOON. I WAS ONLY34 YRS OLD AND I WAS GREAT GRANDMA AT 56. SO THAT IS PRETTY YOUNG BUT I HAVE ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. CHILDREN ARE SO WONDERFUL.
