Nebraska recently became the last state in the nation to adopt a "safe haven" law protecting unwanted children from harm, but it seems the law's broad scope is generating more attention than its timing.

The law let anyone leave a child of any age to the state's custody at a state-licensed hospital without fear of prosecution.

Critics say the law is too broad and could lead to more problems. Supporters say its scope gives it strength to protect all children.

State officials say no hospital has taken in an abandoned child since the law took effect July 18.

State Sen. Arnie Stuthman said he introduced the bill to keep parents from taking more drastic measures.

This is a problem with the one-house legislature - it's too easy to rush through laws like this without wisely amending the junk out of them. They just passed this turkey to stop their phones from ringing, due to the media feeding frenzy.
