A morning fire broke out and a neighbor watched as a man went inside the flaming house to save his wife. The fire broke out just before 10 a.m. at 2821 F Street.

A neighbor letting her dog out saw the flames and called 911. Barb Test said she couldn't believe the house next to hers was on fire. She said she had to look twice to convince herself it was really happening.

She was even more surprised when she then saw a man run back into the house with flames shooting out the window.

"The neighbor came home, I assume he was out. He opened the door, flames are shooting out the window next to the door -- he opens the door to go in," said Barb Test.

Test would later learn the man had something very valuable inside he needed to rescue from the flames.

"He brings a lady out and she was coughing," said Test.

The man's wife had been trapped in the house, and he risked his life to save her.

"The husband ran back in to get her. The window where the flames were coming out is right by the door and he went in," said Deputy Chief Pat Borer. "We don't recommend that, that's pretty dangerous. That's what we're here for. But, he did do that, yeah."

Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews arrived within two minutes of the call and put the fire out.

"They're not going to be able to occupy it. There is considerable damage from fire and smoke. We'll have to help them relocate," said Borer.

Neighbors like Test are glad the fire was extinguished so quickly.

"It makes me feel comforted knowing if something goes wrong they're going to be here fast," Test said.

However, she still can't believe the daring rescue she witnessed.

"I mean, glass was breaking from the flames shooting out. I can't believe the man ran into the house with the fire shooting out the windows, but someone was in there. I'm just in shock," she said.

The husband and wife were taken away from the scene almost immediately. The woman was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say the fire was caused by food burning on the stove.

The good news is everyone turned out OK in what could have been a disastrous situation.
