Nebraska game officials have killed a young black bear that had wandered around Harrison and finally was trapped in a barn north of the Panhandle town.

Jeff Hoffman of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said the bear went through Harrison on Monday and then four miles north to a ranch.

The bear entered a barn, and the ranch owner shut the barn door behind the young male, trapping him.

Hoffman said the bear was killed because he was not acting normally and seemed accustomed to humans -- a problem when it comes to large predators that can prey on livestock, pets or attack people.

He said tranquilizing and relocating the bear was not an option because Nebraska doesn't have large tracts of public land to accommodate bears.

NE Game & Parks has misrepresented the facts of this incident. For the real story (from Harrison residents) go to: http://prairiefreethinker.blogspot.com/

I am appalled at the senseless shooting of a young bear based on laziness and a lack of protocol. There were other options but someone was to lazy to exercise those options. Shame on them! Maybe we should have the right to arm bears! Let's not let this happen again.

I'm sure there were other options, besides shooting the young bear. This reminds me of when the officer shot the baby fox in York. Maybe Nebraska needs training and outside resources to help with these wild animals, instead of instantly killing them.

I have read articules where quick thinking of game wardens not only in nebraska but in other states end in the death of an animal.(The wolf in Whyoming is a good example. Here the bear is safely in a barn locked up;why couldn't they test the bear before disposing of it?

Excuses, excuses. They did not need to destroy that cub. Tranquilizing and turning it over to professionals (such as the HD Zoo in Omaha)where THEY could analyze the situation would have been my choice. Gun-happy Nebraska. WRONG WRONG WRONG!

This bear was a perfect oportunity for a relocation somewhere else Like Colorado or Wyoming. Its easy to say it was acting odd and kill it. The public buys it problem solved sweep it under the rug. I am a avid hunter of big game and have taken many animals in fair chase. This sounds to me like a case of laziness in the game wardens or game and parks commission. So much for all the money they make off of my Hunting license every year. I guess it goes in the coffers. I would rather see that a small portion of that money go to something like this, rather than two foot waste land grass next to a wealthy farmers house so he can get a walk in hunting check! What a waste!

Whats the reason for killing a bear that out of area . take it to a vet

Who said the Bear had rabies?? Nobody. The bear was acting strangely because it was out of its natural habitat. And who said it was diseased?? I will wait for the autopsy report to know. In the mean time everybody scared of bears can go run and hide.

no kidding joey, you are correct. put the animal out of its misery and protect the entire species and humans alike. zoo's will not take animals with diseases or rabies and would you like to pay to move the bear to colorado or wyoming? i'm not willing to pay for that. a bullet is cheaper.

whats more inhumane: shooting an animal to protect us or let the animal suffer from the disease and spread it to others?

When Hoffman made the comment the bear was not acting normal and they it seemed accustomed to humans and could very well attack livestock as well as humans. This is a sign the bear has rabies. Would you want a bear roming around that has rabies? Even if they did had other options, rabies does not go away. They were protecting the people. Yes, it is cruel to kill an animal, but they don't want an animal roming around with rabies.

Just WRONG!

Inhumane and senseless. Just a quick fix for people who did'nt want to deal with it. Wyoming and Colorado are close enough to have resources available to help Nebraska with a unique problem. Game and parks was too quick to shoot first and ask questions later. The bear was harmless and wandering from an area it was forced out off. Nebraska game wardens should be trained on how to deal with species they know little about so they do'nt keep shooting creatures they can't deal with.

I agree Steve, I am almost sure there is some sort of organization that would have gladly taken the bear in. Shooting the bear was totally sensless.

I feel that it was a bad decision on the part of Nebraska Game and Parks to shoot the bear. I understand the lack of land available to relocate to but i do feel there were other options than shooting a lost animal. Im sure there are things that could have been done other than the sensless slaughter of an animal that happened to wander into the wrong place
