Nebraska officials have confirmed the sighting of a mountain lion in northeast Nebraska.

Tom Welstead of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is northeast Nebraska's manager of the commission's wildlife management section. He said Friday that he'd gotten notice of the confirmation a day earlier from commission experts in Lincoln.

The mountain lion was seen just north of the Knox County town of Verdel by Ron Olson of Verdigre. He was in the Lazy River Acres area, looking for mushrooms.

Olson says he saw the cougar when he came between it and the carcass of a deer it had killed. The lion merely walked away.

Olson says that later in the day he, his brother-in-law and a friend set up a game surveillance camera that got a picture.

I guess if I found a mountain lion/cougar with one of my calves, the mountain lion would have to go!

Now the plot thickens. If the game wardens could lure this cougar into a barn like the bear in Harrison they could open up with several rounds of high-powered ammunition and get a kill for bragging rights and also save fuel by not having to drive to the rifle range.

They had better not kill it unless absolutely necessary! Mountain lions are amazing animals. Well I guess if it acts different in any way it's an excuse to kill it. Because their natural territory isn't being wiped out...

Hey, can those guys post their photos of the cougar/lion with this story? I'd love to actually see what one looks like in the wild. Do we know if it is male or female? Do you suppose there's more than one in that area? How far do they travel to hunt? Exciting, but kinda scary too.

I always thought that mountain lions and cougars are two different animals. So which one was actually sighted?
