Lincoln: A 56-year-old Crab Orchard man has been sentenced to a year of home curfew for the unlawful killing of two turkeys.

Paul Payton was sentenced in federal court to 12 months of home curfew, similar to home detention, and five years of probation. He pleaded guilty in February to violation of federal game laws.

Payton is prohibited from hunting, guiding, outfitting, or helping in those activities while on probation.

Payton and his co-defendant, Kent Hippen, have also been ordered to reimburse the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the cost of the investigation.

In lieu of that, Payton is to make a $15,000 contribution to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and a $5,000 contribution to Nebraska Raptor Recovery.

This is ridiculous. How many car windows have been broke by turkeys flying across the road. I know of two in the area and probably have a few that we didn't hear of. Turkeys are everywhere these days. When the deer population is high we give more hunting licenses to thin them out. We need to for turkeys also, besides it was only 2 and they are not endanged. Maybe he should have shot a bald eagle and he would have got a slap on the wrist instead of this harsh penalty.

OK, this is going a bit overboard don't you think? This man poached two turkeys and he is put a year curfew and has to pay $20,000! I am all for enforcing hunting laws as I am a law abiding hunter but this is just crazy.

WOW...are we making an example or what? The turkeys are EVERYWHERE! They didn't shoot an endangered species did they?

What? And elsewhere on this page we can click to a piece that appears to implicate a father being responsible for his toddler's death. He is "forgiven" if he tells the authorities where her body is. It's good to be a turkey, bad to be a child! Or so it appears.
