A former member of the Beatrice City Council is dead following a crash in the southeast Nebraska city.

Authorities say 83-year-old Wayne Bitting died when the pickup he was driving Monday afternoon hit a parked truck.

Police say authorities are investigating whether Bitting suffered a seizure prior to the collision.

Bitting's wife, 83-year-old Charlotte Bitting, suffered a broken arm and leg, and was flown to a Lincoln hospital.

Wayne Bitting served three, four-year terms on the Beatrice City Council. He also was the long time water superintendent for the city before retiring.

Police say an autopsy will be performed to determine what caused his death.

Wayne was a great neighbor and a good friend to Robert Corey and family we had a lot of good time on Mary Street. You will be greatly missed and we will be praying for Charlotte and the Family at this time. God bless you all.

Wayne was a most remarkable humble man. He truly cared about the people of Beatrice and deeply believed in all the causes he supported. He will be greatly missed. We are praying for his wife who stood beside him through all the resistance he endured while serving his country, his city, and his neighbors/friends. Thank you Wayne, for all you did to make Beatrice a better place to live!
