A family pet may be to blame for a fire that destroyed a home in rural Minatare.

Fire Chief Brian Lore said Shawna Applegate left her home about noon Wednesday to take her husband, Kenny, a sandwich. When she came back a few minutes later, their home was on fire.

Firefighters from four departments battled the blaze for more than two hours, but were unable to save the modular home.

Lore said the Applegates' cat may have knocked over a candle on a table in the living room, catching the curtains on fire.

You all have mist the best part of the story. "the family cat may have knocked the candle over" Corey, The cat may have started the fire. I have never heard a pit bull maybe has bit a child in the face or to death!

It's not the idea that the "cat will be offended". The point is that people do not take responsibility for their actions or mistakes.

Yeah.... about that... the people should not have left a candle lit. The cat is not to blame it is the individual(s) who left a candle lit and prone to accidents.

Then the cat didn't start the fire--the candle never should have been left burning with no one home...

What's a candle warmer? Is that like a leotard for your candle? Way to go Jan!!!! I bet you got some of them..tell us where you got them.:)

There are more feral cats running around this town, the humane society stopped collecting them. But, in the cats deffense, you can't blame the cat, its the pitbulls fault who was trying to bite the person who lit the candle who then fled from being injured causing the whole stabockel.

Just another reason why dogs are better than cats.

Posted by: Corey Location: Lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 08:29 PM
Joe said it all "Why blame the cat" that is the same thing with the so called banning of pit's "Why blame the dog or cat for irresponsible owner's"???????????????????????

Posted by: Sara Location: Lincoln,ne on Jul 17, 2008 at 06:31 PM
Really the cat caused the fire. NOT the irresponsible home owner who left a burning candle alone with the cat. I'm sure the insurance company will love that one!

Ever hear of a candle warmer??????????????????

Funny corey, I was just saying "maybe we better ban cats" or candles.

Posted by: Corey Location: lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 03:06 PM
Uh oh vicious cat start's fire better ban cat's along with pitbull's!!

Posted by: Bubba Location: Lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:39 AM
The article does not say....did the cat make it out or perish in the fire?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I agree...the cat did not light the candle and then leave it unattended as she left the house! I know they aren't going to do anything to the cat but the article reads incorrectly!!

Posted by: Jeff Location: Lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Take it easy people, the cat isn't going to be offended.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 17, 2008 at 10:36 AM
The family pet is not to blame. The person who left the candle burning is...esp with a pet in the house. I am sorry for their loss but please, DON'T BLAME THE CAT!

Posted by: mc Location: lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Call me crazy but i don't think that the cat was the one who lit the candle, and then left the house with a lit canlde burning unattended. Hmmmmm, maybe the cat is not the one to blame.

Posted by: Joe Location: Lincoln on Jul 17, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Shouldn't the headline read "Unattended Lit Candle Likely Caused House Fire." Why blame the cat?
