These days corn-based ethanol is being blamed for worldwide food shortages, inflation and environmental problems.

But Nebraska Ethanol Board officials say much of the criticisms of ethanol are based on flawed information, and the industry needs to do more to defend itself.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency to modify the federal requirement to blend 9 million gallons of ethanol into the U.S. fuel supply this year.

He says the mandate plays a significant role in skyrocketing grain and food prices. An EPA ruling on the petition is expected next week.

Nebraska Ethanol Board officials meeting in Kearney Saturday said their industry had been slow to defend itself. Now ethanol faces the monumental task of re-educating a public that hears mostly negative information about corn, food and fuel from ethanol opponents and competitors.

The ethanol industry has been slow to defend itself because it cannot defend itself. If you look at how the whole ethanol "plan" operates you would have to be an idiot to think it's a good thing. First the government subsidizes the price of corn diverted for ethanol use to give farmers an incentive to use thier crops for ethanol rather than food. What does this do, it increases the cost of corn based foods because the supply is less. People think that the ethanol gas is cheaper but it is only cheaper because the government subsidizes it. Where does the government get the money to subsidize it? From your taxes. The people are getting screwed two ways from this. Both in increased food costs and higher taxes to pay for the subsidy. Not to mention ethanol is a less efficient fuel than regular gasoline. So why would anyone vote for this. Get the government out of it and let the market take care of itself. Ethanol would not exist without the government.

I'm just wondering how many of the board members have investments in Ethanol? Cause I will never use the stuff again after my experience with my Mustang, using Ethanol it lost HPower so I said never again.
