Nebraska's two senate candidates toured the state Tuesday, pushing for more support and your vote.

Republican Mike Johanns and Democrat Scott Kleeb are both vying for a Nebraskan Senate seat and both candidates were out and about today.

Johanns made stops in Kearney, Minden and Aurora Tuesday. He met with farmers and business owners. A couple issues kept coming up: the economy and an issue very much a part of the economy these days -- energy.

Nebraska company Royal Plastic Manufacturing has a plan to expand, and Johanns said he has a plan to help them.

"One of the things I've proposed is that companies like this could invest in capital improvement, capital equipment and then expense that on their tax return. It gives them a little bit of extra economic benefit to make additional investments," said Mike Johanns, (R) candidate for Senate.

Like investments in their employees through benefits. It's part of Johanns' economic plan, which includes cutting taxes.

"The '01 - '03 tax cuts aided, provided assistance to 650,000 Nebraskans, so we say continue those tax reductions," he said.

And Johanns said we have to reduce energy costs.

"We're in an energy crisis. We cannot have $4 gasoline, so I say more drilling off the coasts. We can do it in an environmentally sensitive way," he said. "We need conservation, more renewable fuels, wind and solar power."

Johanns said it's issues like energy and the economy that will decide this election.

"I personally like Scott Kleeb. I've met him now on a number of occasions and he's a nice guy, but boy do we see the world differently," Johanns said.

Nebraskans must agree with Johanns opinion on the issues.

According to the latest general election poll Johanns has a 26 point lead over Kleeb. Johanns said he's grateful for the response he's getting here in the state.

I admit I comment on various stories in hopes of finding my new Democratic friends again. Too bad that the Republicans who comment here are mostly right-wing extremists. I really would be interested in hearing from the decent moderates, especially those who still support Hagel and agree with him about the war, and those who oppose the horrible dirty-tricks so-called civil rights referendum, which is paid for and promoted by the same guys that did the swift boat liars against Kerry in 2004. I was pleased to see several decent moderate Republican leaders in Nebraska speaking out against it. I hope that both Johanns and Kleeb openly oppose it. If Kleeb wins, he will be a young rising star in the Democratic Party - and if he loses after a fine campaign, he will still be a young rising star, so there! If Johanns wins narrowly enough, he may decide it is safer to be an independent, centrist, & not a ditto-head to any other GOP leader. That would make him better than most GOP Senators.

hello to DSL and Hoping - I am always happy to see your comments. You sound like such nice people, and well informed. I agree that Kleeb is better than Johanns. Kleeb is interesting, intelligent, idealistic in the good sense, and also realistic, in the sense of being informed about the problems ordinary people have now. There is going to be a major effort to register new Democratic voters on the weekend after the Democratic National Convention. To me, there are hopeful signs that might lead Obama to select the best person for VP. The situation in Georgia calls even more for a foreign policy expert. The age of undecided voters - more over 55 - calls for someone older and more experienced. The need to appeal to more Catholic voters might lead to the selection of a Catholic. The fact that Hillary voters would not like another woman on the ticket, calls for a man with an excellent record on "women's issues." Joe Biden? Most Iowa voters liked him. He's extremely smart and informed.

When Johanns was governor my husband bought $90 a plate tickets so we could attend an event where Johanns would be. You see I am a teacher and I wanted an opportunity to visit with Johanns about educational issues. This was a lot of money for us to spend but it seemed the only way I could voice my concerns to the governor. When we arrived at the event we found out that in order to even get close to Johanns one had to purchase $300 a plate tickets! He was in an area which was actually roped off and only those who had purchased high dollar tickets had the opportunity to visit with him.I learned an expensive lesson. This man doesn't care about the people he is suppose to represent.Money and power are Johanns's motivation. There is a tremendous difference between Kleeb and Johanns.Kleeb is passionate about serving the average Nebraskan and making the world a better place. He is intelligent, hard working and honest. He will not let Nebraska down!

When quoting gas prices regular is cheaper than ethonal blends in every state but Nebraska so do some research and you would know that.

I am delighted to see the intelligent Kleeb supporters commenting on this site. I wish you well and I wish him well. When I say Johanns is not as disgusting as most other Repubicans running this year, believe me, that is not much praise! But I still insist that Kleeb, if he loses, has not lost his last chance. He was willing to run against Hagel, just to carry forward the progressive and intelligent Democratic message on almost everything (whereas Hagel is merely brilliant on foreign policy, and does not break ranks often enough with the GOP on domestic policy). Kleeb has a future! So do we all! The important thing is to organize a progressive movement, that will stay connected, and work for "kinder, gentler" politics and policy. Even if Obama loses! Even if Kleeb loses! We are the ones - not just the leaders - who must continue to carry the burden imposed on us by the phrase: "all that is needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing." Voting won't be enough.

The man spent more time traveling between events then he actually spent AT the events!

I don't understand this ... people in Nebraska want change. Something different than the Bush Admin which was proved when Obama won the polls in Nebraska and appears to be able to sneak away an electoral vote or two for McCain. Johanns was the Ag Sec. for Bush and did nothing for our state of Nebraska. He did nothing to help agriculture. So why is everyone ready to send someone to Washington DC if they haven't done any good with there last job.

I'm glad that Kleeb does not stand a chance.

Remember Johanns,"01-"03 was a different time,We were not in a Recession like we are now,So what ever comes out of your mouth is still and always will be Bla Bla Bla,Thats why Kleeb has my VOTE! Period.

When quoting gas prices, why quote Regular all the time, why not Multi Blend, Super Unleaded or Plus, all the same, but all contain Ethanal, and are 10 cents a gallon less expensive, most people will buy the cheaper gas. Ethanal saves us money everytime we fill up, but the industry is getting little credit from the media.

I don't think it is necessarily true that the people who support Johanns over Kleeb support Johanns on all the issues. Nor do I think that they dislike Kleeb. Johanns just looks like what a TV or movie casting agent would cast as a Mr. Nice Guy U. S. Senator. Kleeb looks like a young, intelligent, challenging college instructor. Most older people are not going to be comfortable supporting such a young man against an older man with so many "credentials" of past positions held and elections won. Particularly since Johanns is not mean or senile, or using a vicious set of campaign advisers. We would be better off if it were Johanns running for President on the Republican ticket. What a different national campaign he would be running! I don't believe he would use the nasty and hypocritical tactics that McCain allows his advisers to use. I don't believe Johanns would have Karl Rove and the old dirty-tricks gang from the Bush 2000 campaign running and advising his campaign.
