Kearney has a lot to offer, including the impressive Believe in Me Ranch. The facility was co-founded in 1996 by Suzan Wilson to provide education and treatment for children, mostly boys, ages 6 to 13.
Primary ranch values include a home-like atmosphere in a country setting, and a big part of their complete system of care is the therapeutic riding program.
"The horse obviously is a very large animal. So for a child or a person with disabilities to ride a horse that is large and to feel that that horse is listening to them, that they're responding to them, that's a powerful thing for any person with disabilities or a child to feel. That animal is listening and respecting them so that increases their self-esteem that they have that relationship there," said Jamie Bentz, therapeutic riding instructor.
Children come from all over the state of Nebraska to reap the benefits of the ranch. From Omaha to Alliance, the Believe in Me Ranch improves the lives of many
Being a part of this transformation is extremely rewarding and fulfilling for the staff. In fact, it's often times hard to put into words.
"I, I can't even describe that. It's amazing, really, because there are kids who come to us that we serve that really have a hard life and don't have a lot of privileges afforded to them when they enter the world," said Joni Reisinger, director of program services.
"We have such a great staff that work with the kids. sometimes 24 hours a day and they love 'em. We love 'em, and it's very rewarding to see kids come and learn new skills and take those skills back to their home or back to their school and be successful," she said.
Every summer, Tommie Frazier hosts a golf tournament that raises money for the ranch. Thanks to the fundraising and donations, the ranch will be moving to a larger farm with much more room to expand their facilities
