Lancaster County prosecutors are asking that Brandon Crago be put to death for the murders of a rural Lincoln couple.
Brandon Crago, 34, appeared in court Wednesday, receiving 10 charges stemming from an Aug. 10 crime spree. His charges include two counts of first degree murder.
It was a crime spree authorities say started in Hall County and ended with the murders of Steven and Carolyn Baily at their home in northern Lancaster County.
Wednesday, Brandon Crago was charged with 10 counts from the crime spree authorities say he took on Aug. 10
The charges include two counts of robbery, four counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, two counts of first degree murder, one count of theft by unlawful taking and one count of felon in possession of a deadly weapon. All charges the prosecution's office considers enough for a case.
"We feel like it's a good case. You may or may not have picked up at the arraignment that we've filed aggrivators on the homicides, and that is our way of showing the intent to seek the death penalty. One of our aggrivators really eludes to the fact that there's a string of violent offenses prior to and after," said Joe Kelly, Chief Deputy, Lancaster County attorney.
Officials say Crago first walked away from a Hastings drug treatment facility on Aug. 7.
Hall County authorities say he then forced his way into a Grand Island home, stealing car keys, money and an SUV.
Hamilton County authorities say Crago then led a high-speed chase and bailed out of the SUV into a cornfield. Shortly after he stole an ATV from a nearby farm, eventually making his way back to Lincoln.
Authorities say Crago began his Lancaster County spree Aug. 10 taking a Jeep from this home at 7130 Morton St. to drive to Ceresco, where he dumped the Jeep and took a Toyota Camry from a garage.
Just four hours later, authorities were called to the home of Steven and Carolyn Baily at 9700 Raymond Rd. That's where authorities found the couple dead from gunshot wounds.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Steven was found on the front lawn, covered by a blanket, and Carolyn was found inside the front door of their home.
Authorities say 45 minutes later Lincoln Fire and Rescue was called to the Budget Host Motel in Lincoln because Crago attempted to commit suicide by trying to stab himself in the heart.
Less than two weeks later, one Lancaster couple is dead, several Nebraska residents remain shaken and scared and Crago faces sitting behind bars in a jail cell the rest of his life.
Although the death penalty option is suspended in Nebraska, Kelly said that doesn't limit the prosecutor's options.
Crago's bond remains at $5 million.
His attorney set a docket call for Sept. 23. His arraignment has not yet been set.
