The Bush administration is proposing stronger job protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to perform abortions because of religious or moral objections.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said health care professionals shouldn't face retaliation from employers or medical societies because they object to abortion.

The proposed rule applies to institutions receiving government cash. It would require as many as 584,000 employers ranging from major hospitals to doctors' offices and nursing homes to certify that they're complying with federal laws protecting conscience rights of health care workers. Violations could lead to a loss of government funding and legal action to recoup federal money already paid.

Abortion rights supporters say they intend to challenge the new rule.

There is no reason that any doctor should be required or forced to perform any medical procedure that they are not comfortable doing.

Why would abortion rights supporters challenge this new rule? Pro-choice people are all about the "rights" and "free choice" of a mother to choose whether her baby dies or not, how can they then say that a doctor does not have the right to choose to do the abortion or not. It is hypocritical for them to say that one person has a choice to do something and another does not have a choice to refuse to do something. I think everyone knows the reason for this objection by pro-choice supporters; doctors are trained to save lives and they are afraid that the number of doctors willing to perform abortions will greatly decrease and that abortion will not become an affordable option for mothers. Hopefully this sick and immoral practice will eventually be illegal, but every step toward it helps.
