A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to a year in jail for beating a college student at a party in Lincoln.

Derrick Phipps was convicted of third-degree assault for pushing 19-year-old Steven Kavanaugh down a flight of steps and repeatedly beating and kicking him in the head in May.

Prosecutors say Phipps and another man attacked Kavanaugh after being asked to leave a party to which they had not been invited.

Lancaster County Judge Gale Pokorny said the attack left the younger man and a woman who tried to protect him with hefty medical bills.

Phipps' sentence was the maximum he could get for the conviction.

Should get a year for each step the other student fell down and each kick! If he was not invited there he also should be charged for trespassing!
