A former foster mom has been sentenced to prison for having sex with a boy in her family's care.

The 38-year-old woman, whose name is not being used in order to protect the boy's identity, on Wednesday was given 20-60 months in prison.

She had been found guilty of second-degree sexual abuse of a protected person.

She had asked the judge for probation, saying, "I'm so sorry for the situation. ..."

But Lancaster County District Judge Robert Otte told her there had to be a clear message "that you just can't do this kind of thing." Otte says the woman's actions hurt the image of the state's foster care program.

The teen had lived with the woman and her husband at various times between 2002 and 2006. She was arrested June 1, 2007.

All these comments about how the judicial system and foster care systems are ineffective. Always blame the government right? But not one comment about how a woman who is trusted to take care of a child who has ended up in her home due to situations like abuse and neglect, and have sex with that child. So I guess in a way, I agree. Both systems suck. The foster care system should screen potential foster parents more carefully, so they don't give kids to sicko pedifiles. And the judicial system... they should have given her 20-60 years. There is never an excuse for hurting a child.

In some cases, the judicial system just plain old stinks!

Please don't hurt there image!! We just can't have that. But giving a mother probation for letting her 4 year smoke pot, talk about hurting the image of the judical system!!

"hurt the image of the state's foster care program"?? Are you kidding? My parents were foster parents in Lincoln for years so I know a few things about this "program". You gave abused and neglected children and babies to my parents and they would nurse these kids back to health and they were thriving. Then a "judge" would give the poor children back to the loser "real parents" and the abuse would start all over again and then they would ask my parents to take them back again when they were really messed up! After too many cases like this my folks couldn't do it any more. It is heartbreaking for the kids and the foster parents. It was obvious that the families staying together was more important than the welfare of these poor kids!!
