They say a journey of one thousand miles starts with a single step. Representatives for 150 teams took their first steps Saturday morning at Omaha's old market, for an 86 mile journey. The journey ended at Lincoln's Haymarket 8 hours and 40 minutes later for team who finished NDORFNZ.COM the relay first.

"It was a little tougher than we thought it was going to be with all of the exchanges and you go all out and then three hours later you have to do it all over again," said team captain Christy Nielsen.

According to the organizers of the race, the course was broken up into several three to five mile legs. Each team member ran up to four legs of the race before they were able to reach Lincoln.

"It's for all levels we had Olympic qualifying marathon runners today and also had people who run a ten minute mile," said Race Director Ben Cahoon.

Cahoon says this is the first race of its kind in Nebraska. However, there are similar races all across the country including the "Brew to Brew" in Kansas, "The Wild West Relay" in Colorado and "Hood to Coast" in Oregon. Cahoon says he was pleasantly surprised by the level of interest in Nebraska.

"When i started it i have an ambitious goal of having a hundred teams, and we had 150 and another 50 teams on a waiting list," said Cahoon.

However this race is a little unique as organizers took extra steps to reduce footprints left on the environment.

"We're trying to do a lot of recycling throughout here, we're doing a rubbish removal contest out on the course, this morning we recycled over 400 pairs of running shoes so we're doing a lot of green things," said Cahoon.

At the end of a ten hour day, and after running up to 20 miles, some runners like Andres Traslavla have their eye on the future.

"I came from Bogota Colombia just to run this race we came in second but we all finished, we loved it and we're coming back next year," said Traslavla.

Organizers say they raised more than $6000, which will be donated to the Nebraska Trails Network. They are already planning for a race next year which will be held on October 10th.
