Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler has thrown down a challenge to his city: Donate 200 cans of SPAM to a local food bank and he'll match it.

He picked the quirky canned meat because it was one of his favorite treats as a child and he knows it could help people.

i hope the food bank gets the donations of the spam it's a great start to getting things that people need and the people that get food from the food banks don't care what they get alot of times as long as they have something to eat spam for 1 thing can be fixed many diff ways maybe every month some kind of drive for any kind of food should be set up like this 1 month soup another something else u'd be surprised how full young childs belly would be anytime of the year not just around the holidays

to: "grossed out" -- my sentiments, EXACTLY. Seeing that this IS the Mayor, seems like he could afford something a little tastier, more expensive, AND nourishing. How about donating 500 cans of tuna (in water), or chicken, salmon, or crab -- something that actually tastes good?

Gross! Would you eat SPAM? People who get food from food banks don't deserve SPAM. Yuk! Treat them as you would your friends or family! How about some healthy food? I mean SPAM??
