The state attorney general ruled yesterday that the University of Nebraska and other higher-level learning institutions are not exempted from a new state law allowing people to carry concealed weapons.

The Nebraska Concealed Handgun Permit Act, passed by the Legislature earlier this year, allows people to carry concealed handguns, but prohibits them in some places, including schools.

But other places not wanting guns are required to post "conspicuous notice" that handguns are banned there.

Attorney General Jon Bruning said college and universities are not considered schools under the act.

University attorney Dick Wood says the signs will be put up.
