AMERICAN LEAGUE
Indians 6 Mariners 2

SEATTLE (AP) -- Cliff Lee followed his All-Star start by pitching his second complete game of the season, scattering 11 hits in the Cleveland Indians' 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Lee improved to 13-and-2.

Lee became the American League's first 13-game winner. Kelly Shoppach ended an 0-for-13 funk with a decisive, three-run homer off injured starter Carlos Silva in the fourth.

Yankees 2 Athletics 1

NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte outpitched Oakland All-Star Justin Duchscherer (DOOK'-shur) by getting just enough run support from Jason Giambi's homer and a sacrifice fly by Alex Rodriguez to help the New York Yankees hold off the Athletics 2-1 for a three-game sweep.

The Yankees are 53-and-45. They won their seventh straight at home and climbed a season-best eight games over .500, entering a three-game series against Minnesota beginning Monday night. Their winning streak at Yankee Stadium is their longest since last September.

Tigers 5 Orioles 1

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Justin Verlander came within an out of completing a three-hitter, Magglio Ordonez and Marcus Thames hit solo homers and the Detroit Tigers handed the Baltimore Orioles their 15th consecutive Sunday loss, 5-1.

Ryan Raburn had two RBIs for the Tigers, who gained a split of the four-game series to move back to .500.

Verlander is 8-and-9. He was replaced by Todd Jones after allowing his second walk of the ninth inning. Jones then walked Aubrey Huff before retiring Kevin Millar on a grounder to end it.

Blue Jays 9 Rays 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Alex Rios and Marco Scutaro (SKOO'-tuh-roh) homered and the Toronto Blue Jays avoided a three-game sweep with a 9-4 victory over the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Scutaro hit a three-run homer off Edwin Jackson during the fifth to put the Blue Jays ahead 6-4. Rios had a two-run homer in the third and added a run-scoring double during a three-run seventh that extended Toronto's lead to 9-4.

Reliever Shawn Camp threw 1 2-3 scoreless innings for the win. The Blue Jays won for just the fourth time in their last 17 road games.

Royals 8 White Sox 7

CHICAGO (AP) -- Esteban German hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox.

German was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Mike Aviles had three hits for the Royals, who have won five of their last seven games.

Joakim Soria got three outs for his 26th save in 28 opportunities and Ramon Ramirez pitched 1 1-3 innings for the win.

Jim Thome doubled in the seventh inning for his 2,000th career hit and Joe Crede hit a three-run homer for the White Sox, who have lost five times in seven games. Nick Swisher also hit a two-run homer for the White Sox.

Rangers 1 Twins 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Taylor Teagarden broke up Scott Baker's perfect-game bid with a sixth-inning home run for his first career hit, and Vicente Padilla pitched the Texas Rangers past the Minnesota Twins 1-0.

The Rangers denied the Twins their fourth series sweep over the past month, handing them just their eighth defeat in the last 31 games. Baker took a hard-luck loss, his first in six starts.

Angels 5 Red Sox 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Casey Kotchman hit a two-run double to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 for their fifth straight victory.

With another late comeback, the Angels completed their first three-game sweep of Boston in seven years. Los Angeles scored four runs in the seventh Saturday for a 4-2 win.

The Angels now have a nine-game lead over Oakland in the AL West, the biggest lead in baseball.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Brewers 7 Giants 4

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high five runs, pitcher Manny Parra had an RBI single en route to winning his eighth straight decision and the Milwaukee Brewers completed a season sweep of the San Francisco Giants, 7-4.

Corey Hart added a solo shot for the Brewers, who took all six meetings with the Giants this year and are off to a nice start after the All-Star break.

Milwaukee acquired second baseman Ray Durham from the Giants for two minor leaguers to help the Brewers make a playoff push.

Marlins 3 Phillies 2, 11 innings.

MIAMI (AP) -- Jorge Cantu (HOHR'-hay KAHN'-too) hit a bases-loaded single off the scoreboard with none out in the 11th inning, and the Florida Marlins tightened the NL East race by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. The Mets and Phils are tied for the lead with the Marlins just a half-game back.

Alfredo Amezaga led off the 11th with a single against Clay Condrey. Hanley Ramirez walked on a 3-2 pitch. Jeremy Hermida bunted to Condrey, who looked to third base before throwing late to first, and the infield single loaded the bases.

Cantu singled on a 1-1 pitch and was mobbed by his teammates.

Florida's Doug Waechter struck out pinch hitter Chris Coste with runners at second and third to end the top of the 11th. He's 2-and-2 with the win.

Dodgers 6 Diamondbacks 5

PHOENIX (AP) -- Andre Ethier (EE'-thih-ehr) hit a go-ahead triple to highlight a five-run ninth-inning rally and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5.

The Dodgers took two of three from Arizona to pull even with the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Brandon Webb and the Diamondbacks had staked Brandon Lyon to a three-run lead. But the Diamondbacks closer, pitching in his third straight game, couldn't hold it.

Mets 7 Reds 5, 10 innings.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Third baseman Edwin Encarnacion (EHN'-kar-nay-see-ohn) hit one of Cincinnati's three homers off Mike Pelfrey, then made a throwing error in the 10th inning that helped the New York Mets rally for a 7-5 victory and a split of their four-game series.

The Mets have won 11 of their last 13 games, salvaging their season one month after they fired manager Willie Randolph. The latest victory left them in a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the NL East heading into their three-game series at Shea Stadium that starts Tuesday.

New York needed some help to pull it out. Encarnacion provided it with his team-leading 16th error.

Nationals 15 Braves 6

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Washington Nationals, again led by former Braves outfielder Willie Harris, made Atlanta look like a former contender.

Harris drove in five runs and reached base five times, Jesus Flores had four hits and Austin Kearns hit a two-run homer as the Nationals routed the Braves 15-6.

Washington outscored Atlanta 23-8 to win the last two games of the series. The series loss was a crushing disappointment for the fourth-place Braves, who hoped for a strong start after the All-Star break.

The only highlights for Atlanta were two homers by Mark Teixeira, who had three hits and drove in three runs, and a two-run homer by Martin Prado in the fourth off Odalis Perez, who improved to 3-and-7.

Cubs 9 Astros 0

HOUSTON (AP) -- Ryan Dempster struck out seven in eight shutout innings to earn his first road win in two years and the Chicago Cubs snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-0 win over the Houston Astros.

Mike Fontenot (FAHN'-teh-noh) hit a solo homer and a two-run double and Derrek Lee had three RBIs to help Chicago shake out a mini-offensive slump that bridged the All-Star break.

Dempster is 11-and-4. He allowed six hits, all singles, and got his first road win since June 2, 2006, at St. Louis. He's 10-1 in 12 starts at Wrigley Field this season, but was 0-3 with a 4.03 ERA in eight starts away from home before Sunday.

Cardinals 9 Padres 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Aaron Miles' grand slam in the ninth inning, the first game-ending hit of his career, helped the St. Louis Cardinals recover from another blown save by Jason Isringhausen in a 9-5 victory over the San Diego Padres that wrapped up a four-game sweep.

Rockies 11 Pirates 3

DENVER (AP) -- Matt Holliday and Jeff Baker homered and had three hits each, Aaron Cook won his team-leading 12th game and the Colorado Rockies completed a four-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-3.

Cook is 12-and-6. He was roughed up for three runs in the first but gave up just one hit over his final six innings to get the victory.

Clint Barmes (BAR'-mehs) had three hits and Ian Stewart was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs for the Rockies, who swept a four-game series for the first time this season.

Zach Duke is 4-and-7 with the loss. Duke went five-plus innings, striking out five. He retired the first 10 batters of the game before giving up nine runs to his final 16 batters.
